Annapolis, Md. -- Navy sprint football (1-0) opened its season with a 48-13 win over Johns Hopkins this afternoon at Rip Miller Field. The Mids owned a 42-0 lead before the Blue Jays scored their first points of the day during the fourth quarter.

Five different Navy players took the ball into the end zone, including senior Scott Lieng (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda), who scored two touchdowns. Lieng opened up the scoring barrage with a 20-yard run just three minutes into the match. He then closed out the third quarter with a 21-yard pass reception from senior quarterback Chris Ashinhurst (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) for his second score of the day.

Ashinhurst, the two-time Collegiate Sprint Football League MVP, completed 14 of his 23 attempts for 184 yards and three touchdowns.

?I thought we played well for our first game,? noted Ashinhurst. ?We have a lot to build on for our next game.?

The Mids dominated the ground game as Navy picked up 241 rushing yards and held the Blue Jays to only 34 yards on 39 carries. Lieng led Navy with 46 rushing yards, while sophomore Jake Owens (Pensacola, Fla./Booker T. Washington) took seven carries for 41 yards and one touchdown.

On the other side of the ball, seniors John Schindel (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) and Chris Zachary (Frisco, Texas/Frisco) led the defense, chalking up nine and eight tackles, respectively.

Junior Matt Clark (Raliegh, N.C./Enloe) added two field goals for the Mids and averaged over 40 yards on each of his four punts.

?It was a good first game,? commented head coach Maj. Jerome Rizzo, USMC. ?I was really happy with our starters today. There are things we need to get better at, but I was pleased with our performance.?

The Mids will be playing at Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium next Saturday, Sept. 20 at 5:30 p.m. The sprint team will play Penn after Navy's varsity squad takes on Eastern Michigan at 1:30 p.m.
