Annapolis, Md. -- Navy sprint football (2-0) posted a 10-6 win over the University of Pennsylvania (0-1) tonight at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
Tied 0-0 at halftime, the Mids put the first points on the board with 1:12 left in the third quarter on a field goal by junior Matt Clark (Raleigh, N.C./Enloe).
The Quakers took a 6-3 lead at 12:41 in the fourth quarter, as quarterback Tim Murphy connected with James Donapel for an eight-yard completion. Navy blocked Penn's point after attempt and then drove the ball downfield for a touchdown to take the 10-6 lead 51 seconds later. Senior Adam Matthews (Livingston, Wis./Iowa-Grant) caught a 54-yard pass from quarterback Chris Ashinhurst (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) to give Navy the four-point advantage. Matthews ended the night with four pass receptions for 104 yards.
On the other side of the ball, Navy held the Quakers to only six points as three defensive players collected nine tackles apiece.
?I was really proud of the way our entire defense stepped up,? noted senior co-captain Chris Zachary (Frisco, Texas/Frisco), who led the squad with eight solo tackles.
Navy held on for the win tonight despite turning the ball over seven times (two interceptions and five fumbles). The Mids picked up 228 yards of total offense as senior Maurice Chapman (Atlanta, Ga./Frederick Douglass) accumulated 90 total yards, 47 on five pass receptions and 43 on two carries.
