College Sports Television (CSTV) will broadcast the 2003 Pride Bowl as the Navy sprint football team challenges Army on Oct. 5 in Newark, N.J. The contest will be aired live by CSTV from the Newark Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium at 2 p.m.
Last season, the Mids went 7-0 as they posted two wins over Army en route to their second straight Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) title. Navy returns 17 starters from last season?s squad, including two-time CSFL MVP Chris Ashinhurst (QB/Stafford, Va.) and second-leading scorer Maurice Chapman (RB/Atlanta, Ga.).
The Mids took home a 22-7 victory in the 2002 Pride Bowl.
"I had no idea what to expect last year when we went up there,? commented Navy?s second year head coach Maj. Jerome Rizzo, USMC. ?I hadn't even seen the field. But when I looked from the bench across the field at our midshipmen and their cadets, it hit me that I was coaching a game with all the tradition and in a stadium with all the pageantry that mark the 'big' Army-Navy games.?
The Pride Bowl is the chief fundraiser for Project Pride, a non-profit organization that raises money for underprivileged youth in Newark, N.J. In 24 years, the volunteer-based foundation has raised more than three million dollars for this noble cause. Thus, the telecast will be more than just a football game.
