- No strangers to the road, the Seawolves have played four of their six games to date on the road ... Saturday's match-up with the Mids marks the fifth road trip of the year ... the Seawolves are 1-3 in games played away from Stony Brook.
- Stony Brook takes care of the ball ... the Seawolves are averaging just 12.8 turnovers per contest ... SBU, however, is coming off a season-high 19 turnovers at Rhode Island.
- Stony Brook held Lehigh without a basket for 18 minutes in the second half ... Lehigh was 2 for 31 against the Seawolves in the second half.
- Sophomore guard Mitchell Beauford has scored in double figures in five-consecutive games, including a 21-point effort against Rhode Island Wednesday night ... he is averaging a team-best 16.8 points per game.
- Senior center Cori Spencer has been precise in his shooting this season ... he is hitting 63.0 percent (29-46) of his field goals and is 20 for 20 from the charity stripe.

Navy Head Coach Billy Lange
Career Record: 42-23 (In Third Yr.) Navy Record: 3-4 (In First Yr.)
On March 26, 2004, Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk introduced Billy Lange as the Mids' head men's basketball coach, the 19th in the program's storied history. Lange came to Navy from Villanova where he served as a member of the Wildcats' coaching staff for the three seasons.
While at Villanova, Lange played a vital role in the daily operation of the men's basketball program where he served as both an assistant coach and coordinator of basketball operations.
In his three years at Villanova, Lange was part of a staff which led the Wildcats to three-straight appearances in the National Invitational Tournament, including the quarterfinals in 2004.
At the age of 32, Lange already owns an impressive coaching resume. Appointed head coach at the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 1999, Lange led his team to a 39-19 (.672) record in two seasons, while claiming two Skyline Conference crowns and a berth in the 2001 NCAA Division III Sweet 16. Lange was named the New York Metropolitan Basketball Writers Division III Coach of the Year in 2001.
A native of Haddon Heights, N.J., Lange played basketball at Bishop Eustace (N.J.) High School for his father, Bill Lange Sr., and at Rowan College before moving into the coaching ranks in 1995. In his first and only season as the head coach, taking over for his father who was in a life-threatening accident just one week into the season, Lange led Bishop Eustace to a 20-6 record and an appearance in the state New Jersey State Championship game.
In 1996, Lange joined the staff at Philadelphia University where he spent the next two seasons working for head coach Herb Magee. In 1998, he moved into the Division I ranks as an assistant coach at La Salle University where he helped tutor forward Rasual Butler, who is now in his third season with the Miami Heat.
Lange and his wife, Alicia, have a son, Will, who was born December 15, 2003, and are expecting their second child next spring.

Alumni Hall
The Mids have traditionally been known as a strong home court team. Navy was 15-2 at Alumni Hall during the 2000-01 campaign, winning 15 in a row while boasting a 6-0 league mark at home.
Since opening its doors for the 1991-92 season, Navy has produced a 120-61 (.663) record in Alumni Hall. Against Patriot League foes, the Mids are 51-30 (.630).

Home Sweet Home
With its nine-point, 69-60 victory over the Merchant Marine Academy N23, Navy opened the home portion of its schedule. The Mids will play 13 of their 27 regular-season contests in the friendly confines of Alumni Hall. It's the fewest regular-season games played at home since the 2000-01 campaign in which Navy played host to just 12 games in Annapolis. The Mids played host to Army and Bucknell in the Quarterfinals and Semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament that season, bumping the total to 14 games. Last season, the Mids played eight of its first-12 games at Alumni Hall, including two sets of three-straight games.

Navy-Ohio Notes
- Averaging 73 points a game going into the contest, Ohio held the Mids to a season-low 55 points.

- The Mids committed a season-high 32 turnovers against the Bobcats.

- Rookie guard Corey Johnson dished out a career-high tying six assists against the Bobcats.

- All 16 players who dressed played, including freshman Ben Biles who saw the first action of his young career and scored three points.

Navy-Belmont Notes
- Navy gave up 91 points to Belmont, the most points scored by an opponent since Colgate produced a 91-84 win over the Mids last January.

- Navy was strong at the free throw line against the Bruins, knocking down all 10 shots.

- Averaging better than 40 rebounds a game, the Mids were held to a season-low 31 boards at Belmont.

- Junior Leonard Green turned in a season-high nine points, as he was perfect from the field (3-for-3) and from the charity stripe (2-for-2).

- Senior captain Taj Mathews dealt out a career-high tying eight assists against the Bruins.

Common Foes
Of the six opponents Stony Brook has faced this season, three are future opponents for the Midshipmen. The Seawolves have recorded wins over Army (68-54), Columbia (77-73) and Lehigh (56-49). In addition, Stony Brook will meet America East foe, UMBC, twice this season. UMBC handed the Mids a 67-61 loss in Navy's season opener N19.

Milestone Watch
Several Mids have recently reached milestone marks or are on the verge of career plateaus.
Junior guard David Hooper needed 12 points going into last weekend to top the 400-point plateau and did so behind a 15-point effort against Ohio. Fellow junior Matt Fannin is nearing the 300-point barrier thanks to a career-best 20-point effort against VMI two weekends ago. He is just a bucket from posting 300 for his career and 14 boards shy of 200.

Nonleague Ledger
Over the last 11 years, Navy squads have produced a 72-76 (.486) record against non-Patriot League competition. The Mids have been 50 percent or better in six of those 11 years (counting 2004-05), but three of the last four years have produced dismal results. In this decade, Navy is 23-41 (.359) and over the last three-plus seasons, the Mids are 15-33 (.313).

Double Down
In four of Navy's first-five contests, a Midshipman produced a double-double. Senior forward Laramie Mergerson scored 15 points and added 12 rebounds against UMBC (N19) in the season opener, while tallying 12 points and 11 boards against the Merchant Marine Academy (N23). In Navy's 10-point win over Morgan State (D1), he dumped in a season-high 21 points and added 10 boards for his third double-double. Over the last nine games dating back to last season, Mergerson has produced five double-doubles.
Meanwhile, junior forward Matt Fannin produced his first-career double-double behind a career-high 20 points against VMI (N28), while adding a personal-best 13 rebounds. It marked the most rebounds by a Navy player since Francis Ebong corralled 17 against Lafayette F16, 2002.

Twenty Something
A Navy player has scored 20 or more points in four of the last-six contests, including a pair of 21-point efforts by freshman guard Corey Johnson.
The last time Navy put together four-consecutive games with at least one player scoring 20 points was during the 2001-02 season. Jehiel Lewis scored back-to-back 21-point efforts against Bucknell (J12, 02) and Lehigh (J16, 02), while Jason Jeanpierre followed with 24 points against Colgate (J19, 02) and Kyle Barker tossed in 23 against Lafayette (J23, 02).

3-7
Navy has won three of its seven games this season, not a bad start to the season. Last season, Navy won only five games all season and it didn't record its third victory until the 12th game. The last time the Mids won three of their first-five games was the 2000-01 campaign. Navy lost its first-two contests to Texas (79-65 in Preseason NIT) and Rice (69-51), before winning four in a row.

The 70's Game
Over the last four years, Navy has scored 70-plus points just 26 times in 93 games (.280). In the last three seasons, the Mids have scored 70 points just 11 times in 63 games (.175). Last season, Navy scored 70-plus points just four times, while this season, the Mids have scored 70-plus points in three of the seven outings.

Board of Control
Navy's front court tandem of Laramie Mergerson and Matt Fannin is one of the best in the league in terms of rebounding. Mergerson leads the league with his 8.0 caroms per contest, while Fannin is not far behind, averaging 5.7 per game and is ranked No. 6 in the conference. The duo also own two of the top-three single-game rebounding efforts in the league this season. Fannin grabbed a career-high 13 boards against VMI (N28), while Mergerson pulled down a career-high 12 in the season opener at UMBC (N19).

Carom Collectors
Navy is averaging 41.3 rebounds per game, after grabbing a season-high 52 against VMI (N28). The Mids own a 4.0 rebounding edge over their opponents this season. The 52-rebound effort against the Keydets is the best single-game rebound mark in the Patriot League this season.

It's a Steal
Navy is ranked No. 2 in the Patriot League in steals per game, averaging 9.86 per game behind Holy Cross' 11.83 spg. Freshman guard Corey Johnson and senior Taj Mathews are ranked among the top 10 pocket pickers in the league. Johnson, who leads Navy, is grabbing 2.14 steals per game and is ranked No. 2 in the league, while Mathews is posting 1.71 steals per game and is ranked 7th.

Pickin' Pockets
Navy produced 20 steals in its 69-60 victory over the Merchant Marine Academy (N23). That mark stands tied for the second-most single-game steals in program history. Navy also swiped 20 passes against Gettysburg in 1999 and the Coast Guard in '96 and again in '99.

From First To Worst
Navy is atop the league in one of the most important statistical categories - rebounding offense (41.3 rpg). That said, the Mids are last in the conference in rebounding defense (37.3 rpg allowed). Navy, who was atop the league in scoring offense until last weekend's weak scoring output, is ranked second in the Patriot League with its 70.0 points per game. The Mids are now last in scoring defense, giving up 77.0 points per contest.

Scoring Outburst
Loyola (52) and Navy (49) combined to score 101 points in the first half of the Mids' win over the Greyhounds (N21). Navy's 49 points are the most in a half since the Mids turned in a 51-point effort in the second half of a 95-66 victory against Washington (Md.) College last December. The Mids' 89 total points against the Greyhounds are the most by Navy since its win over Washington (Md.) College. It's also the most points scored by a Patriot League team this season.

Triple Play
Last season, Navy averaged four three-pointers per game. This season, the Mids have made 36 in seven contests (5.1 3FG/Gm), including a season-high eight at Loyola (N21). Last year, Navy made eight or more three-pointers in a game just twice - eight vs. Belmont (N24) and against Army (J30).

Aggressive Play=Fouls
Navy's style of play this season has been an exciting aggressive style of hoops. With the up-tempo pace, Navy has recorded 152 fouls, an average of 21.7 per outing. That being said, Navy has also upped its steal average, picking off 69 passes (9.9 spg), while a year ago the Mids posted 217 (7.8 spg) steals.

Baldwin Returns
Sophomore forward Carlton Baldwin, Navy's top returning scorer (8.0 ppg) and rebounder (4.1 rpg), missed the first-three games of the season before making a brief appearance in the VMI contest (N28). Baldwin, who suffered an injury similar to turf toe in mid-September, had the fractured toe on his left foot surgically repaired S19. He was thought to be out between three and six months, but has made a speedy recovery. Through four games, Baldwin is averaging 6.5 points and 2.5 rebounds, while shooting 68.8 percent from the field.

Mergerson Picks Up Where He Left Off
Senior forward Laramie Mergerson appears to have not missed a beat after a strong conclusion to his junior campaign last March. Mergerson, who averaged 17.0 points and 9.0 rebounds, over the last three games of the 2003-04 season, scored 15 points and grabbed a career-high 12 boards against UMBC (N19) in the season opener. In Navy's home opener, he produced 12 points and 11 rebounds, while swatting a career-high three blocks against the Merchant Marine Academy (N23). In the Mids' win over Morgan State (D1), he turned in his third double-double of the season with a 21-point, 10-rebound effort.
He not only leads Navy with his 8.0 rebounds per game average, he is atop the league, as well. Meanwhile, he is ranked third in the conference in blocks (1.57 bpg). He is the only Navy player ranked in the Patriot League's top 15 field goal shooters, hitting 48.3 percent (29-60) of his shots this season and is ranked 12th.

Hooper For Three
Junior guard David Hooper hit at least one three-pointer in 18 of the 28 games last winter, and has made a triple in 36 of the 54 games (.667) in which he has played during his career. That success has carried over, as he has made a team-high 12 triples in Navy's seven contests this season.
Hooper moved into ninth on Navy's all-time three-point field goals made list when he hit a pair of triples in a 5-for-5 field goal shooting effort in the Mids' last home game against Morgan State (D1), pushing his career total to 69. With that, he moved past T.J. Hall (1992-95) who recorded 68-career three-pointers. With five makes over the weekend, he now owns 74 for his career, just six off Kyle Barker (2000-02) in eighth place.

All-Time Navy 3-Pt. Field Goal List
1. 201 Michael Heary, 1995-98
7. 84 John Haase, 1990-93
8. 80 Kyle Barker, 2000-02
9. 74 David Hooper, 2003-present

Onyekanne's Season Slowed
Junior swing player Chika Onyekanne has spent much of the last two years slowed by chronic tendonitis in both knees. Last season, he played in just 10 games, including the final eight of the year. When he did play, he was solid, averaging 6.1 points and 6.1 rebounds over the final seven games of the season. This year, Onyekanne has played in just one game, minimal time against the Merchant Marine Academy (N23) After sitting out last week, the coaching staff has high hopes for his return this weekend against Stony Brook.

Mathews Heats Up
After picking up two fouls in the first-six minutes of the opening half of the VMI game (N28) and scoring just four points in the first 20 minutes, senior captain Taj Mathews heated up in the second stanza, scoring 15 of his career-high 19 points. He added four rebounds, three assists and a career-high four steals.
Mathews is tied for 22nd in the league in scoring, averaging 9.0 points per game. He is No. 4 in assists, dishing out 3.4 helpers a contest and is fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio at 0.86.

CJ at the Point
It's rare to see a player at the Naval Academy contribute on the basketball court during his freshman season. It's even more unlikely to see a plebe start. Not only is rookie Corey Johnson a starter, he's Navy's prime ball-handler. In his first-collegiate game (N19 at UMBC), Johnson contributed a career-high six assists, two rebounds and hit a critical three-pointer late in the gam. In Navy's win at Loyola (Md.) (N21), he scored a career-high 21 points, hitting eight of his 18 shots, including a pair of triples. He also grabbed a team and career-high four steals in the Mids' win. Against the Merchant Marine Academy (N23), Johnson threw up 21 points for the second-straight game, while grabbing a career-high five steals and adding four assists.
Johnson leads the Midshipmen in assists (3.6 apg) and steals (2.1 spg). He ranks third and fourth in the league in those categories, respectively. He is also ranked No. 6 in the Patriot League with a 0.76 assist-to-turnover ratio. Averaging 33.6 minutes of action a game, he is the only Navy player to average 30-plus minutes this season.

Johnson Named Patriot League Rookie of the Week
Navy starting guard Corey Johnson was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week N29. Johnson is the first Navy player to garner weekly conference recognition this season.
Johnson averaged 13 points, five rebounds, three assists and 3.5 steals per game last week in contests against the Merchant Marine Academy and VMI. The rookie produced a career-high tying 21 points against the Mariners, shooting 8 for 16 from the field, including 3 for 6 from three-point range. In addition, he grabbed five rebounds, dealt out four assists and swiped a career-high five steals. He followed up with a five-point, five-rebound effort against VMI last Sunday.

Globally Known
Navy has 17 players listed on its varsity squad list. Those 17 players represent 12 different states - California (3 players), Colorado, Indiana (2 players), Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas (2 players), Utah, Virginia and Washington (2 players).

O'Garro's Virgin Islands Adventure
Senior George O'Garro competed as a member of the Virgin Islands National Team in the 2004 Senior CARICOM Basketball Championship in Santiago, Cuba June 11-18.
Born in Christiansted, St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, O'Garro was contacted by the Virgin Islands in late May and was extended the invitation to play with the national team. Following his military obligation, O'Garro traveled to his homeland, joining the team June 1 in preparation for the first of three tournaments to qualify for the Olympics.
The Virgin Islands National Team was the defending title holder of the Senior CARICOM Basketball Championship last held in 2002. This year's squad, minus several players who are currently playing overseas in their respective professional play-offs, didn't fare as well, putting together a 1-3 record. O'Garro, who was a starter at small forward, averaged nearly 10 points a game. He helped lead the Virgin Islands to an opening-round victory over Turks & Caicos, 99-29. The Virgin Islands went on to lose three straight to Barbados (72-64), Antigua (78-68) and Bahamas (82-71) and were unable to qualify for the Centrobasket Championship which will be held in the Dominican Republic July 7-11.

The Best of the Rookies
Forward Carlton Baldwin made a name for himself at Navy and around the league during his rookie season. As Navy's leading scorer, averaging 8.0 points per game, Baldwin produced 199 points as a freshman, the 14th-best scoring output by a Navy in Academy history. He fell one point shy of becoming just the 14th freshman in school history to post 200 points.

Format Changes for the 2004-05 Patriot League Slate
For the second time in three years, the Patriot League has changed its format. In 2002-03, the Patriot League implemented a "hybrid" weekend which featured a Friday-Sunday format. In 2004-05, there are two significant changes to its scheduling both during the regular and postseasons. The most noticeable change is the move to split the men's and women's games. No longer will there be men's and women's doubleheaders. Instead, while the men's team plays at home, the women will be playing the same institution on the road, and vice versa. The second change to schedule is the Patriot League Tournament. Beginning this season, the top-two seeds will play host to four-team "mini tournaments" with the winners advancing to the championship game at the site of the higher seed. There is a potential to have four different sites hosting the men's and women's postseason tournament.

Navy Picked Seventh In the Patriot League
The Patriot League's coaches and sports information directors picked Navy to finish seventh according to the 2004-05 Preseason Patriot League Men's Basketball Poll.
Behind the play of Patriot League preseason all-league pics Kevin Bettencourt, Charles Lee and Chris McNaughton, Bucknell picked up 10 of the 16 first-place votes to pace the field, while defending Patriot League winner Lehigh received three first-place votes. American, who nearly picked off Lehigh in the Patriot League Tournament Championship, also received three-first place votes, but came in third in the voting.

A New Era
For the first time in more than a decade, Navy opened its season with a new head coach. Billy Lange took over the reigns following the 2003-04 campaign after Don DeVoe guided the Mids to a 12-year 184-161 record.
Navy's 19 head coaches have produced a 13-6 record in debut games, winning 13 of the first 14. The Mids' last five coaches have lost their debut game, including Paul Evans who lost to fourth-ranked Maryland, 86-64, on N28, 1980. The last coach to win his debut game - Navy Senior Associate Athletic Director Dave Smalley against the University of Baltimore in 1966.
