Transcript Of Head Football Coach Paul Johnson's Comments

Oct. 13, 2005

Q. First of all, do you only get 30 minutes a day with your players? Do you only have 30 minutes to meet?

A. That's news to me.

Q. For the record, how much time do you have?

A. Meeting time? We meet for 45 minutes every day?

Q. That's all?

A. That's all we met at Georgia Southern and we managed to win a few games doing that.

Q. Is that why you run the same plays over and over? Because you don't have time to do anything more complicated?

A. I guess. We'll see. I guess.

Q. How did the team look this week? Did they have a good practice week?

A. We've practiced okay.

Q. Just okay?

A. It hasn't been great, but it hasn't been terribly bad. It's been okay.

Q. The quarterback they have coming back have you been able to get a look at him?

A. Yeah, we saw him on film.

Q. He was initially signed by Alabama.

A. Yep.

Q. Does he look like a decent player?

A. Yeah, he's okay.

Q. That's it?

A. What do you want me to say about him? I mean they are 1-4, what do you want me to say? That he's Joe Namath? He's okay.

Q. I was going to ask you a little more about your secondary. Is King going to start again this week?

A. Yes. Probably.

Q. What was your general evaluation on how he played last week?

A. I thought he played okay. He got better as the game went along.

Q. What happened to Thrasher? He was in the picture early and hasn't played much the last couple of games.

A. He's going to play this week.

Q. So he's still in the picture at cornerback?

A. Yeah, he will probably start as the nickel back.

Q. Who is the backup at Rover?

A. This week Greg Sudderth will probably start at safety. Greg was banged up last week.

Q. Does that mean Dell Robinson won't start?

A. Yeah, Robinson won't start. You have Rashawn King, if he can go; you have Keenan, DuJuan and Greg.

Q. Who is backing those guys up these days?

A. The same guys. You have Greg Thrasher and Ketric Buffin backing up at corner and at safety you have Jeff Deliz and Keenan can play safety.

Q. Dell?

A. Dell's hurt. I don't think Dell is going to play.

Q. Have you used Buffin at all this year? It looked like he had a pretty good preseason. Has he played at all?

A. I think he might have been in early on some stuff, but he hasn't played lately on defense.

Q. You had said your kick coverage had improved against Duke. How did you feel it did against Air Force?

A. We had one bad deal, but we changed some personnel again. We are going to keep changing personnel until we do it right.

Q. Are you talking kickoff coverage or punt coverage?

A. Kickoff coverage. On the punt coverage we just missed a couple of tackles. The kid broke two tackles once and got about nine yards, but other than that it was okay.

Q. How were Bullen's kickoffs? Were they going to the end zone more?

A. They were okay Saturday going with the wind. When we were against the wind we squibbed it. With the wind he kicked it in the end zone.

Q. Anything else that concerns you about Kent State? They throw the ball 50 times per game. Is that something that concerns you? You haven't had a team do that against you all year? Do you feel like you are untested in the secondary?

A. I don't know. We'll see if they get to throw it 50 times. I would be real surprised if they get 20 possessions in this game.

Q. You have to have it to throw it that much.

A. If they get 20 possessions then one of two things have happened. It's either going to be 100-82 or they beat the fool out of us.

Q. So you don't expect that?

A. I don't expect to get 20 possessions, no.

Q. How is Matt Hall doing at fullback?

A. He's doing okay. He's been adequate. We are still waiting for a breakout game.

Q. Did Ballard get a lot of time in the Air Force game?

A. He played some. Not a lot.

Q. Is he okay?

A. Yeah. He's going to play. He's banged up a little bit, but he's going to play.

Q. Are you starting to see that a little more? More nicks and bruises?

A. Yeah, just nickel and dime stuff.
