Navy Head Coach Brian Newberry Announces 2026 Football Staff

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Navy head coach Brian Newberry announced his 2026 coaching staff today.
 
On the defensive side of the ball, Eric Lewis has been promoted to defensive coordinator, replacing P.J. Volker, and will also continue to coach the safeties. Lewis, who is entering his fourth season at Navy, previously served as the defensive passing game coordinator and safeties coach.
 
Ricky Brown has been promoted to co-defensive coordinator and will continue to coach the outside linebackers. Brown is entering his fourth year at the Naval Academy and was previously the special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach.
 
Jerrick Hall has been promoted to associate head coach for defense and will continue to coach the defensive line. Hall enters his eighth year at Navy. He previously served as the defensive running game coordinator and defensive line coach.
 
Charles Mack has been hired from Utah State to coach the cornerbacks. In his first year at Utah State in 2025, Mack helped Utah State to a 6-7 record (4-4 Mountain West) and its 12th bowl game in the last 15 years.
 
Mack previously coached at New Mexico (2024) and VMI (2023) and was a regional scout (2019) and graduate assistant (2020-22) at Virginia.
 
Mack played four years at Richmond (2013-16), appearing in 45 career games for the Spiders. Overall, he recorded 59 tackles, six pass breakups, one interception, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. As a senior, he recorded a career-high eight tackles in a second-round win against North Dakota en route to leading the Spiders to the FCS quarterfinals. Richmond also made the FCS playoffs in 2014 and 2015, including a semifinal appearance in 2015.
 
Mack earned his bachelor's degree in leadership studies and sociology from Richmond in 2017 and his master's degree in social and philosophical foundations from Virginia in 2021.
 
He is married to the former Carley Wilson, and they have a son, Wesley.
 
Brenten Wimberly, who previously assisted Volker with the linebackers, will serve as the linebackers coach and will be assisted by Va'a Niumatalolo, who previously assisted Hall with the defensive line.
 
Wimberly is entering his fourth year at Navy, while Niumatalolo is entering his seventh.
 
On the offensive side of the ball, Drew Cronic returns for his third year as the offensive coordinator.
 
Mick Yokitis has been promoted to associate head coach and special teams coordinator and will continue to coach the wide receivers. Yokitis, a 2006 graduate of the Naval Academy, is entering his 16th year at Navy.
 
Anthony Zehyoue has been hired as an assistant offensive line coach. Zehyoue comes to Navy from the Naval Academy Preparatory School, where in two years he led NAPS to a 15-0 record while serving as the offensive coordinator and coaching the quarterbacks (2025) and offensive line (2024). NAPS averaged 47 points per game in 2025 and 35 points per game in 2024.
 
Prior to NAPS, Zehyoue coached for 10 years at Loyola Blakefield High School and served as the head coach from 2017-24. Zehyoue led the Dons football program to two Turkey Bowl victories (2021 and 2023) over Calvert Hall, snapping a winless streak that stretched back to 2013. His overall coaching record at Loyola was 38-28.
 
Zehyoue was also part of the coaching staff at Catholic High School in Baton Rouge from 2009-15.
 
Zehyoue played four years at LSU (2004-07), where he walked on and eventually earned a scholarship. He was a member of the 2007 National Championship team and earned the Eye of the Tiger Award in 2007, which is presented to a student-athlete of any sport who has demonstrated immense perseverance, dedication and determination in overcoming significant adversity.
 
Zehyoue is a 2007 graduate of LSU, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in history. He earned a Master of Arts in teaching from LSU in 2009 and a post-master's certificate in leadership in 2023 from Loyola University Maryland.
 
Zehyoue, a native of Liberia who moved to Baton Rouge due to the First Liberian Civil War, is married to the former Leah Saal.
 
Tommy Laurendine, who is entering his fourth year at Navy, will move from the offensive line to coach the fullbacks, while Ivin Jasper, entering his 27th year at Navy, will return to coaching only the quarterbacks.
 
David Cole (snipes), Jay Guillermo (offensive line) and Jon Williams (tight ends) all return in their same coaching roles. Cole and Guillermo are entering their third year, while Williams is entering his fourth.
 
Off-the-field promotions include Mike Palmer (defensive analyst), Josh Bost (associate AD/football chief of staff) and Courtney Weiner (director of football and recruiting operations), while Mackenzie Womack was hired as the assistant director of on-campus recruiting.
 
Danny Payne (executive director of football recruiting and analytics), Jason MacDonald (director of player personnel), Capt. Brandon Jones, USMC (director of player development), Marvin Lewis (director of video), Syrus Amirian (director of scouting), Ronnie Gillis (director of football creative design) and Laura Webb (administrative assistant to the head coach and recruiting coordinator) also return to complete the staff.
