ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Despite outshooting Colgate 22-5, the Navy women's soccer team was unable to find the back of the net and the Raiders scored on their lone shot of the second half to post a 1-0 victory over the Mids in Patriot League action Saturday morning at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. CU's Jackie Burch fed the league's top scorer Franny Iacuzzi who broke free from the Navy defense and fired a shot over Navy keeper Haley Crain's (Friendswood, Texas) head in the 72nd minute.
Navy had multiple scoring opportunities in the game, but could not finish. It's a problem the Mids have faced throughout the season. In its league opener at American two weeks ago, Navy got off 12 shots on goal, but was unable to find the target. In their 1-0 loss to Army a week ago, the Mids held the Black Knights to one shot in the opening half, but it was all Army needed for a 1-0 win. In today's contest, Navy outshot Colgate 14-1 in the second half, forcing keeper Luisa Miller to make four saves. Several other goal-scoring opportunities by Navy, including chip shots by junior midfielder Molly Burd (Englewood, Colo.) and junior forward Meggie Curran (Silver Spring, Md.) late in the game, cleared the cross bar.
Senior forward Sarah Hessinger (Oceanside, Calif.) and Curran paced the Mids with four shots apiece, including two on goal.
Navy owned a 7-1 corner kicks advantage with all seven coming in the second half.
The Midshipmen play their final home game of the season Monday when they play host to Howard. Action is set for 7 p.m. with a pregame ceremony scheduled to honor Navy's four seniors.
