ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Victories in the opening five events helped spark the Navy men's swimming and diving team to a 172-117 victory over Johns Hopkins, Saturday afternoon in Lejeune Hall. The Midshipmen improved to 3-0 on the young season while the Blue Jays dropped their season opening meet.
"Winning the opening events as we did really set the tone for the afternoon," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts. "The guys came out firing at the start and helped us build a good lead. From there we coasted on emotion. I am really fired up about how we swam today."
After Navy won the 400 medley relay in a time of 3:56.25, Josh Andres (So., Glen Allen, Va.) posted a 8:42.06 to win the 800 freestyle by three seconds. His win was followed by Andrew Thorn (So., Elizabethtown, Pa.) winning the 200 free (1:56.45), Kevin Mukri (Jr., Silver Spring, Md.) capturing the 100 backstroke (58.77) and Ari Molina (Fr., Arlington, Va.) taking the 100 breast (1:08.09).
Robert Sershon picked up the first Johns Hopkins victory of the afternoon in the 200 fly (2:08.25), but Navy answered right back with wins by Joe Smutz (Sr., Marriottsville, Md.) in the 50 (23.74) and 100 free (53.65) and Mukri in the 200 back (2:07.78).
Matt Fedderly would break the run of Navy victories by winning the 200 breast in a time of 2:30.72, with Thorn following in a time of 4:10.09 to win the 400 freestyle.
"Andrew Thorn is racing very well right now," said Roberts. "He is swimming very well technically and seems to have picked up where he left off last season with his aggressiveness."
Navy will take to the road for the first time this season next Saturday when the Mids compete at UMBC in a 12 noon meet.
