Navy to Play Host to NCAA Zone A Diving Championship

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy's Lejeune Hall will be the site for this week's NCAA Zone A Diving Championship, which will determine the qualifiers from the region for the upcoming NCAA Championship meets.  Included among the field of 176 qualifiers are seven divers from Navy.

The meet begins Monday, March 9 and runs through Wednesday, March 11.  Monday's slate features the women's one meter (10:30 a.m.) and men's three meter (noon), Tuesday's events are the women's three meter (10:30 a.m.) and men's one meter (noon) and platform diving will be contested on Wednesday (women at 11 a.m., men at 2 p.m.).

Fan Access
Fans without prior authorization will NOT be allowed to drive through the USNA gates.  Additionally, those without prior approval will NOT be allowed to access the USNA by walking through one of the gates.

The only way for those visitors to gain access to the USNA for the meet is to ride the shuttle bus, which will depart from and return to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium (550 Taylor Avenue, Annapolis, Md., 21401).  Enter the blue / west parking lot through gate 5 off of Taylor Avenue.  There is a $10 per vehicle parking fee.  The free fan shuttle bus will leave from and return to the Blue Angel jet.  

Everyone ages 18 and over must have a valid picture ID (i.e.: State issued driver's license with REAL ID or a U.S. government issued passport). Visitors ages 17 and younger without a valid picture ID must be accompanied by an adult.  Security screening will take place prior to someone being allowed on the bus.

Foreign passports are not permitted for general access.

The shuttle bus will ONLY be available for entrance to the USNA at the following days and times:
Monday and Tuesday - 10 a.m. to Noon / 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Wednesday - 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. / 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

A bus will be available at Lejeune Hall throughout the meet to return fans to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, but they will only be allowed to return to the USNA during one of the above windows.

Fans unable to attend the meet can view it through the Navy Athletics Facebook page.

Format
The preliminary rounds of the events will see the divers perform six dives, with the top 18 from that round advancing to the finals.  All scores from the preliminary rounds will carry over into the finals.

Zone A has the following allocation for the national championship: women - six on the one meter and platform and five on the three meter; men - four on the one meter and platform and five on the three meter.

Women's qualifying scores for the meet were 265 points on the one meter, 280 points in three meter and 225 points in platform diving.  The men needed 300 points to qualify in one-meter diving, 320 points to advance in three-meter diving and 300 points in the platform events.

Navy Preview
Navy's zone qualifiers are Lily Barrett, Claire Ellish, Mackenzie Kim and Izzy Olson from the women's team along with Finn Gelbach, Luke Ogren and Anthony Sciulli from the men's team.

Kim will be competing in her fourth zone championship and this year has qualified in each of the three events.  She was a finalist in the one meter (10th), three meter (11th) and platform (18th) events at the 2024 meet and also placed 13th in platform diving at the 2023 zone championship.  This year, Kim recorded scores of 296.30 on the one meter, 323.90 on the three meter and 225.25 in platform diving to qualify for the zone meet. 

Barrett, Ellish and Olson all qualified for their first zone meets and did so in the one-meter event.  Barrett posted a score of 269.10, Ellish 269.75 and Olson 268.90 for the three to qualify.

Gelbach, Ogren and Sciulli each will compete in the two springboard events and Gelbach also qualified in platform diving.  

Sciulli matches Kim as a four-time qualifier for the zone championship.  He has competed in both springboard events in each of his three prior seasons and also in platform diving at the 2024 event.  Sciulli posted scores of 332.30 points to qualify on the one-meter board and 355.85 points to compete in the three-meter event this season.

Gelbach was a finalist in two of his three events at the 2024 meet (seventh in platform, ninth in three meter) and in both events last season (seventh in three meter, 12th in one meter).  He qualified for this year's meet with scores of 386.10 in the one-meter event, 370.75 on the three-meter board and 303.15 on platform diving.

Making his zone meet debut is the freshman Ogren with his scores of 338.75 in one meter and 347.55 in three meter.
