ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy intercollegiate sailing team competed in five regattas this past weekend, earning a divisional win and a spot at nationals.
Navy hosted two qualifying regattas at the Robert Crown Center, the MAISA Freshman Regatta as well as the MAISA Women's Singlehanded Qualifier (Faye Bennet Trophy). Saturday the sailors saw winds at 5-10 knots from the northwest. Trapezoids were sailed south of Trident Point in the morning, and in the Severn after lunch. Eleven races were completed in both the Freshman and the Singlehanded event. At the end of Saturday, Navy's top laser radial sailor, Charlotte Hill, was in seventh place, three spots out of qualifying for Nationals. The Navy freshmen were in second place, where the top seven move on to the Atlantic Coast Championship. On Sunday, sailors saw a northwest breeze at 5-12 knots. The final five races were held inside Greenbury Point. Hill sailed extremely well, posting a 1-2-4-4-4 in a fleet of 28, moving her into a tie for fourth place (114 pts.). She won the tiebreaker and is heading to Hawaii for the ICSA Women's Singlehanded Nationals, on Nov. 18-20. Catherine Long finished 10th (197 pts.), Maggie Reynolds 14th (224) and Kristen Ullman 25th (347). The Freshman sailed well on Sunday as well, minus one DSQ. They ended the day third overall. Andrew Vann and Kira Devers-Jones finished fourth in the A Division. Andrew Hotchkiss with Stephanie Altomare and Dan Umpa finished second in the B Division. Hobart finished first (72), St. Mary's was second (122) and Navy (148) was third. The Freshman Atlantic Coast Championship will be held on Nov. 6-7.
The co-ed team traveled to Kings Point for the KP Dinghy Open. Seventeen teams sailed in both 420's and FJ's. A big breeze was seen on Sunday, gusting at 18-20 knots from the north-northwest with substantial upwind current causing steep chop. Navy finished sixth overall. Rob Ramirez and Mike Mullee finished seventh in the A division (114 pts.) and Ian Gill with Krysta Anthony finished third in the B Division with 69 points.
The co-ed team also traveled to Brown for the Sherman Hoyt Trophy. Saturday was a gloomy, damp, New England day with winds at 4-6 knots from the east with lots of rain. Gold Cups were sailed all day. Sunday was still just as chilly, but no rain and more breeze. Sailors saw 8-16 knots from the north-northwest and sailed windward leeward courses. Conditions were very shifty both in velocity and direction. Navy finished 16th overall. John Keith (races 1-10) and Dave Parker (races 11-13) sailed with Slava Haywas (races 1-8, 11-13) and John Appelbaum (races 9-10) finishing 17th in the A division. Gary Grimes and Kristen Sproat finished 12th in the B division.
The women's team was at Connecticut College for the Stu Nelson Regatta. Sailors were met with the same rainy conditions as Brown, but were blessed with slightly more breeze ranging from 5-12 knots. Ten races in the A division and eight races in the B division were completed on Saturday. Sunday the rain ceased and the breeze settled as well, coming from the north-northwest and proceeded to die throughout the day. Katie Whitman and Andrea White sailed a fantastic regatta, finishing first in the A division with 58 points (20 points ahead of second place). Trish Kutkiewicz and Audrey Callanan finished 15th in the B division. The team finished ninth overall.
