UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Top-ranked and undefeated Penn State handed the Navy women's soccer team a 5-0 loss Sunday in the Mids' regular-season finale. The Nittany Lions turned in their program's first perfect season with a 19-0-0 record, while Navy's 10 wins this season are the fewest since the 2000 campaign in which the Mids posted a 10-9-2 mark.
PSU owned an 18-2 shot advantage, giving up just one shot in each half. Navy freshman forward Kristen Laraway (Long Valley, N.J.) was credited with both shots, including a shot on goal in the opening stanza.
Four different Penn State players scored, including senior Janelle Hoak whose first-collegiate goal in the seventh minute turned out to be the game-winner. Navy keeper Haley Crain (Friendswood, Texas) reached up and tried to clear the initial shot, but the ball came off her fingertips and gave Hoak a clear shot at the goal.
The Nittany Lions tacked on a goal in the 42nd minute when Crain came out to challenge the goal. The cross from Jean Rettig was headed over Crain by Zoe Bouchelle for Penn State's second goal.
Navy changed keepers at the half, inserting freshman Jill Lyons (Clifton Park, N.Y.) who had played in four prior games and a combined 101 minutes. Lyons made four saves in the second half, but allowed three goals, as PSU claimed a win on "Senior Day."
