ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy intercollegiate sailing team competed in two regattas this weekend, finishing fifth in both.
The co-ed team traveled to Old Dominion University for the War Memorial Regatta. This regatta served as the final inner-district ranking regatta for the season. MAISA, the district Navy competes in, uses both the America Trophy at the end of the Spring semester, as well as the War for laying out the competition schedule for the following year. On saturday, sailors were met with 12-24 knots out of the NNW. Competition was close all day. Eight races were sailed. Courses were Gold Cups and Windward-Leewards with gates. Navy ended the day in third overall, three points out of second. On sunday, the breeze died down all day. Six races were completed before the time limit. Navy finished fifth overall with 160 pts. Garth Fasano, Kristen Sproat and John Appelbaum finished seventh in A division. Gary Grimes, Slava Haywas and Mike Mullee finished third in the B division.
The women's team traveled to Harvard for the Victorian Urn Trophy. Saturday morning the sailors were met with a light snow flurry. By noon the temperature had dropped, the breeze built momentarily, and the snow came down hard. As is expected with The Charles, the breeze was shifty and patience paid off. Seven races were sailed in the A division, six in the B division. The girls ended Saturday in fourth overall. The racing was so close that third through eighth place were separated by only 10 points. Sunday the temperatures rose and so did the breeze. There were 10 races in the A division and 11 in the B division to complete the rotation by 3:00 p.m. Navy finished fifth overall with 257 pts. Katie Whitman and Andrea White finished seventh in the A division with 135 pts. Charlotte Hill and Maggie Reynolds finished fifth in the B division with 122 pts.
