ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Mids' squash team kept its unbeaten streak intact Sunday, defeating Stanford, 8-1, and Connecticut College, 9-0, in the final day of competition at the Navy Squash Round Robin. Navy improved to 8-0 on the year, while sixth-year head coach Craig Dawson claimed his 100th-career coaching victory with the Mids' win over Stanford. Dawson owns a 101-42 (.706) record as Navy's squash coach.
The Mids gave up just one loss to Stanford and just their third of the season. Freshman Christopher Zipf (Gladwyne, Pa.) was ousted in four games by the Cardinal's Joe Kirscher at the No. 7 spot on the ladder, 10-8, 9-4, 2-9, 9-7. Meanwhile, team captain Scott Hackman (McLean, Va.) was a thrilled in five. The senior captured the No. 2 victory after finding himself down two matches to zero. He came back to win the third and fourth games, 9-0, 9-0, before taking the match in the fifth with a 10-8 victory.
In the final match of a three-day tournament, the Mids put it in cruise control, sweeping Connecticut College. Sophomore Brian Hamilton (Lake Forest, Ill.), who has played in all eight matches this fall, claimed a pair of wins at the No. 6 spot. While he swept George Kwon of Stanford, Hamilton needed four games to get past Hunter Nadler in the finale. Meanwhile, freshman Will Pappas (Philadelphia, Pa.), who stumbled in his first match of the weekend against his Denison foe, rebounded nicely, picking up a pair of wins over Washington and Hobart later in the weekend and in Sunday's matches, he swept both foes to improve to 5-1 on the year.
"We had a great weekend of squash, winning all six matches and improving to 8-0 on the year," said Dawson. "I really appreciate the guys playing so hard, especially pulling through against Stanford in my 100th win. That was special."
The Midshipmen return to action next weekend when they play host to Dartmouth, George Washington and Penn State. Navy and Dartmouth kick things off with a 10 a.m. meeting on Saturday in Annapolis.
