Navy In Fifth After Day One of NCAA Championships
Matt Albright fired a 583 in smallbore to help Navy to a fifth-place showing after day one at the NCAA Championships. |
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The Navy rifle team has positioned itself for a run at the NCAA title tomorrow after firing a 2,314 in the smallbore discipline on the first day at the NCAA Tournament. The Mids sit in fifth place, just 20 points behind Alaska-Fairbanks' 2,334. The top six teams are all within 24 points of each other.
"It's obviously a very tight team race, just as we expected," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "I was reasonably pleased with our performance. It was right in the range of where we have been shooting."
The Albright brothers led the Mids on Friday. Senior Matt fired a 583, while freshman Josh tallied a 581.
"We will need a good performance tomorrow," said Kelley. "We have shot well in air all year, so hopefully we can continue that. It could come down to the last shot of the tournament and it is the tightest it has ever been. Hopefully, we can make some noise tomorrow."
Action concludes tomorrow with the air rifle discipline.
