Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Boston College

Annapolis, Md. - The Navy baseball team opened its 2005 home schedule Saturday by dropping a doubleheader to Boston College at Max Bishop Stadium. The Eagles handed the Mids a 13-1 loss in the opener and then pushed across seven runs in the seventh inning of the second game to break a 2-2 tie and grab a 9-3 win.

Boston College improved to 10-6, while the Midshipmen dropped their eighth straight to fall to 3-11-1.

Navy scored first in both games, but could not hold onto the lead either time.

Senior Matt Lukevics (Tampa, Fla.) scored on a wild pitch in the third inning of the first game to give the Midshipmen a 1-0 advantage.

However, Boston College scored seven times the following inning. BC would tack on two runs each in the fifth, seventh and ninth innings to secure the win. Third baseman Jared McGuire led the Eagles' offensive attack by going 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and two runs scored, while Mike Flynn drove in four runs. Starting pitcher Mike Wlodarczyk pitched five innings and allowed one run on six hits to run his record to 3-1, while Nick Asselin pitched the final four frames to earn his first save of the season.

Lukevics teamed up with freshmen Renaldo Hollins (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Mitch Harris (Mt. Holly, N.C.), as all three Navy hitters each had a pair of base hits. Harris extended his team-high hitting streak to nine games in the process, but the streak was snapped in the second game as he went 0-for-3. Navy starting pitcher Burgess Nichols (Boston, Mass.) absorbed the loss to fall to 1-2.

Navy got off to a solid start in the first inning of the second contest.

The Mids pushed two runs across in the home half of the frame, as junior D.J. Faldowski (Washington, Pa.) roped a double over the center fielder's head, which rolled all the way to the wall to allow Hollins and junior Jonathan-Matthew Johnston (Hamilton Township, N.J.) to score.

BC, again, answered with two runs in the fourth. Flynn doubled down the left field line to drive in a pair to knot the game at 2-2. The Eagles scored seven runs in the seventh inning off three Navy relievers to go up 9-2. The Mids tried to mount a rally in the seventh and scored a run on Lukevics' RBI double, but couldn't push anymore across. The second game of the doubleheader was just a seven-inning contest.

The loss overshadowed a strong performance by Navy freshman hurler Mark McCoy (Parkland, Fla.). McCoy, making just his third start of the season, went six innings for the no-decision, despite yielding just two runs and scattering six hits with six strikeouts. Reliever James Lee (Asheville, N.C.) was saddled with the loss after giving up three runs and retiring no batters in the seventh inning.

Both teams will be back in action Sunday at noon, as they square off in the series finale at Max Bishop Stadium.
