IC Sailing Has Success Over The Weekend

April 7, 2005

The 76th annual Boston Dinghy Cup was hosted by MIT and Harvard. The regatta is similar to Navy's Truxtun Umsted with 4 divisions. The sailors were able to sail in FJ's, Larks and Techs. Saturday's breeze was up early in the day, blowing 15-20 from the SE with lots of rain. It eventually shifted to the NE and died down to 5-10 knots. On Sunday the breeze was very puffy, blowing 3-20 knots from the S straight through all the buildings of downtown Boston. Seventeen races total were sailed. Dartmouth claimed the regatta with 373 points. Navy finished 10th with 624 points. Garth and Kristen finished eighth in the "A" division with 143 points. John Keith and Lauren Sutehall finished eighth in the "B" division with 144 points. Steve Gay and Danny Conley finished 14th with 192 points. Rob Ramirez and John Appelbaum finished 10th in the "D" division with 145 points.

The co-ed team also traveled to Hobart William and Smith Colleges for the North Spring #1. Saturday's breeze was strong, yet died down throughout the day. Sunday's breeze was blowing over the hill down onto the course, shifting left all day. HWS had a great home-water advantage and won the regatta with 65 points. Navy finished second with 109 points. Cullen Shaughnessy and Clay Magee finished 4th in the "A" division with 55 points. Dave Parker and Amanda Burney finished third with 54 points.

The women's team traveled to Boston to sail on Mystic Lake at the Duplin Trophy hosted by Tufts University, sailing Larks. Saturday's breeze was light and puffy and incredibly shifty. Sunday was much breezier, blowing from the damn, across the lake. The last set of the day saw puffs up to 18 knots. In the middle of the day, Navy held the lead, averaging nothing worse than fifth per set. In the end, however, Charleston came on strong with 1-2 sets all afternoon and took over the lead, winning with 68 points. Navy finished second with 76 points. Katie Whitman with Slava Haywas and Cat Long finished fourth in the "A" division with 47 points. Charlotte Hill and Andrea White tied for first in the "B" division, but lost the tie-breaker with 29 points.

IC Sailing will compete in three regattas this weekend.
