ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy intercollegiate sailing team finished in the top 10 in five different regattas over the last two weeks.
March 12-13:
Admiral Moore at SUNY
The sailors did well at a tough regatta site with current being a major issue across the entire race course. The breeze was NNW 12-18 knots on saturday and 5-10 on sunday. Sixteen races were completed in an 18 boat fleet of 420's. The Mids finished ninth overall, with the "A" division sailed by Steve Gay with Maggie Reynolds, placing 9th with 143 pts. The "B" division was sailed by Ian Gill with John Leone, finishing 10th with 142 pts.
St. Mary's Team Race Intersectional
The Mids went 3-6, which just squeezed us out of the top six. The saturday breeze started at 15 knots from the SW, but shifted and died to NW at 5 knots. The competition featured 45 races. We began the day well, yet our rotation led to tougher and tougher teams. Sunday, Navy raced the "final four" consolation round in very light, dying NNE breeze, going undefeated on sunday giving it a 6-6 final record. Over the two days 69 total races were completed. Sailors were Chuck Fulmer, John Keith, Garth Fasano, Lauren Sutehall, John Appelbaum and Kristen Sproat.
Navy Spring Women's Intersectional
Saturday the Mids finished fifth at the Navy Spring Women's Intersectional. The wind ranged from 3-8 knots and was blowing from SSW dropping down onto the race course from behind the sailing center. We completed six races in the morning, then sailed the remainder of the day off of Trident Point and capitalized on our boatspeed and ability to read the puffs dropping down on the right. All races were sailed in the river with light wind and lots of current going downwind all day. Katie Whitman and Slava Haywas finished seventh in the "A" division with 107 pts. Charlotte Hill and Andrea White placed fourth in the "B" division with 72 pts.
March 19-20: St. Mary's Women's Intersectional
Last saturday the sailorsfinished 10th overall at the St. Mary's Women's Intersectional. Navy arrived at St. Mary's to see a mirror on the water, as very little breeze was blowing. It eventually filled from the SE and built to hiking conditions by the end of the day. Six races were completed. Sunday the breeze was lighter, completing two races in "A" division. After a break due to lack of breeze, four races in each division were completed, to make a 10-race regatta. Katie Whitman, Slava Haywas and Cat Long finished 8th in the "A" division with 83 pts. Charlotte Hill and Andrea White finished eighth in "B" division with 86 pts.
Truxtun Umsted at Navy
Navy had a fantastic weekend at home, putting in a true team effort to make this regatta work. There were 20 teams from around the country competing in four divisions, two double-handed and two single-handed. Saturday the sailors were given extremely light wind, but the regatta management was able to get off two races in each division. The results were close between the top five schools all the way to the end. Navy finished in second place overall with 293 points. Harvard won the regatta with 283 points. Garth Fasano and Kristen Sproat finished seventh in "A" division with 82 points sailing 420's. John Keith, Lauren Sutehall and Clay Magee finished second in "B" division with 43 point sailing FJ's. Steve Gay finished 13th in "C" division with 117 points sailing Laser Full Rigs. Chuck Fulmer finished third in "D" division with 51 points sailing Laser Radials.
