NEW YORK, N.Y. - Senior Joshua Sink (Welcome, N.C.) finished second out of 153 competitors with a time of 25:29 to lead the Navy men's cross country team to a third-place showing out of 17 teams at the Fordham Invitational on Saturday at Van Cortlandt Park. The Midshipmen finished only five points behind Providence and 20 points from invitational champion Princeton.
"Josh looked spectacular out there today," said head coach Al Cantello. "In my wildest dreams, I would not have picked the order of finishers today."
Sink's time over the course was only bested by Providence's Martin Fagan, who was a 2004 All-American and finished 33rd at the NCAA Championship last year. Fagan crossed the finish line in 25:26, only threee seconds ahead of Sink.
Following Sink for Navy was sophomore John Olsen (Staten Island, N.Y.), who crossed the finish line ninth overall with a time of 25:49. Olsen's showing was his fastest time over an 8K course during his career, two seconds quicker than at the Indiana State Invitational last season.
Four other Midshipmen runners landed in the top-20 of the meet. Junior Michael Niemi (Duluth, Minn.) landed 12th with a 26:04 effort, while junior Adam Craig (Commerce, Mich.) covered the course in 26:21 to finish 16th and sophomore John Kress (Colorado Springs, Colo.) placed 18th with a time of 26:26 to round out the top-five Mids times.
Senior captain Ty Rose (Germantown, Tenn.) finished right behind Kress with a 26:32 showing to serve as a place-holder in 19th overall. Freshman Andrew Grant (Statham, Ga.), last week's overall top finisher at the Sea Gull Opener, crossed the finish line 22nd with a time of 26:34 for the Mids.
Navy returns home next Saturday, September 17 to host the Navy Invitational at the USNA Cross Country Course. The meet is scheduled to commence at 11 a.m.
