IC Sailing to Compete in Four Regattas This Weekend

Sept. 15, 2005

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy intercollegiate sailing team will compete in four regattas this weekend, highlighted by a trip to Dartmouth for the Mrs. Hurst Bowl. The co-ed team, freshman team and laser sailors will also be in action.

The women's team is heading to Dartmouth for the Mrs. Hurst Bowl. Twenty-one teams from across the nation will be competing both Saturday and Sunday in Flying Juniors. Katie Whitman, Catherine Long, Charlotte Hill, Andrea White and Kira Devers-Jones will be representing the team.

The co-ed team is competing in the Nevin's Trophy at Kings Point. Nineteen teams from around the country will be competing in three different divisions of flying juniors, 420's and lasers. John Keith, Krysta Anthony, Dave Parker, Gary Grimes, Kristen Sproat, Andrew Hotchkiss, Chuck Fulmer and Mac Fletcher will represent the team.

The freshmen are travelling to the Freshman New Sailor Groundbreaker Regatta at SUNY Maritime. Fifteen teams from Navy's district will race in two divisions of 420's. Andrew Vann, Lauren St. Pierre-Hetz, James Licata, Paul Tucker, Melanie Doliente and Daniel Umpa will represent the team.

Lastly, the laser sailors will be heading to West River Sailing Club for the Konningsberg Regatta. Jeff Sharp, Kevin McGill, Jake Gerlach, and Ian Gill will sail in Laser Full Rigs. Maggie Reynolds, Trisha Kutkiewicz and Kristen Ullman will sail Laser Radials.

Over the past weekend the intercollegiate team competed in four regattas.

The team traveled to Old Dominion University for two regattas. The Riley Cup is a co-ed dinghy regatta and the ODU BYO Radial Regatta that is seen as a tune-up regatta for the Faye Bennet Trophy later next month. ODU saw breezy conditions all weekend. Saturday saw very shifty and puffy ENE breeze ranging from 15-25 knots. Eight races were completed in both divisions. Sunday the breeze was the same, just stronger. Six races were completed. Some breakdowns occurred, due to the strong breeze. Ian Gill with Kristen Sproat finished fourth in A division (76 points). Andrew Hotchkiss (races 1, 2, 5-8) and Paul Tucker (races 3, 4, 9-14) with Krysta Anthony crewing finished 10th in B division (144 pts.), finishing eighth overall.

Navy also had three radial sailors out in the breeze at ODU. The radial course had 22 boats sailing modified Gold Cup and Triangle Courses. Charlotte Hill showed strong finishes, minus three capsizes over the two days. The sailor that won the regatta is campaigning for the 2008 Olympics and is currently on the US Sailing Team. Hill finished third with 90 points. Catherine Long finished eighth with 143 points. Trisha Kutkiewicz was 12th with 166 points.

The co-ed team traveled to Dartmouth for the Captain Hurst Bowl. The regatta is known for having very little wind, which caused the race committee to postpone the report time by 30 minutes. The postponement brought on the breeze from NNW at 5-12 knots. Six races were completed in both A and B division. Sunday, the lake produced inconsistent breeze and the regatta was called at 4:00 p.m. Rob Ramirez and Mike Mullee finished 21st in A division. Katie Whitman and Slava Haywas finished 18th in B division. The team finished 20th overall.

Navy hosted the third quarterfinal (Navy Laser Open) for the Carl Van Duyne Singlehanded National Qualifier last weekend as well. Light winds prevailed in Annapolis all weekend. Two races were completed on Saturday and four races on Sunday for the 30-boat fleet. The top six finishers move on to the semifinals on Oct. 8-9. John Keith finished 10th, Mac Fletcher finished 11th and Garth Fasano was 19th. Navy will be hosting the final quarterfinal on Sept. 24-25, which will move on the top three finishers.
