Box Score | Team Stats

Albany, N.Y. - Navy scored two of its five goals in the first 10 minutes of its contest at Albany Friday afternoon where it cruised to a 5-0 shutout over the Great Danes in the opening round of the Governor's Cup played in Albany. The Mids improved to 5-1-2 with the victory and own a five-game unbeaten streak.

Senior All-Patriot League midfielder Sarah Hessinger (Oceanside, Calif.) scored her first of two goals on the afternoon in the sixth minute thanks to a serve by junior forward Meggie Curran (Silver Spring, Md.). The Mids tacked on a goal to its lead when Curran fired in a shot in the ninth minute off an assist from Molly Burd (Englewood, Colo.).

Hessinger and Curran teamed up for the second time when Curran fed Hessinger at the 14:56 mark to give Navy a 3-0 lead. The Mids took a 4-0 lead into the locker room when a long shot by rookie midfielder Elise McCaskey (Butler, Pa.) bounced off a Great Danes defender and past keeper Andrea Dunn in the 30th minute.

Navy put the game away in the second half when freshman Kristen Laraway (Long Valley, N.J.) found second-year forward Kari Weniger (St. Petersburg, Fla.) for a chip shot in the 80th minute.

Head coach Carin Gabarra made a change in goal for the Mids, inserting freshman Lizzie Barnes (New Orleans, La.) into the lineup. Barnes and fellow newcomer Jill Lyons (Clifton Park, N.Y.), who each saw their first-career collegiate minutes split time in goal where the two combined for three saves.

Curran, meanwhile, continues to move up Navy's career points leader board where she is tied with 2000 graduate Shannon Filbin for sixth with 65 points. Meanwhile, she took sole possession of sixth on the career goals chart with 22 and broke into the top 10 assists record book with 21 over her three-year career. With a minimum of 12 games remaining, Curran stands tied for 10th on the Mids' single-season assists list with eight. The record is 11 set by the late Stacy Finley (2003) and Ty Westinghouse (1994).

Navy returns to action Sunday when it faces Siena in the first game of the afternoon at the Governor's Cup. The Saints, who collected their third win of the season Friday behind an 8-0 thrashing against Howard, will meet the Mids at 1 p.m. in Albany, N.Y.
