Annapolis, Md. - The Navy women's soccer team improved to 7-2-2 Sunday, producing its sixth shutout of the season with a 2-0 victory over Quinnipiac at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. Freshman forward Iris Boivin (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored her fourth game-winning goal of the season when she fired in a shot in the 27th minute.
Navy controlled the game from the opening whistle, outshooting the Bobcats, 20-3, for the game, including an 11-1 advantage in the opening stanza. Quinnipiac's lone shot in the first 45 minutes was taken midway through the opening half when defender Rachele See took a free kick which Navy senior keeper Haley Crain (Friendswood, Texas) snatched out of the air.
Boivin's shot came shortly thereafter when teammate Sarah Hessinger's (Oceanside, Calif.) shot was blocked by a defender, followed by Kari Weniger (St. Petersburg, Fla.) sending the ball over to Boivin for the goal.
The Mids played more aggressive in the second half and were whistled for 13 fouls. Navy, though, worked hard to keep the ball in the scoring third of the field, as the Mids took nine shots in the second 45 minutes, four of which were on goal.
Navy tacked on an insurance goal in the 53rd minute when Weniger served junior Meggie Curran (Silver Spring, Md.) from the far right-hand side of the goal, nearly at the end line. Curran was set up perfectly as she tapped the ball in for a team-best seventh on the season.
"I'm happy with the result," said Navy head coach Carin Gabarra. "We did a good job of possessing the ball and creating several goal-scoring chances, but we have to do a better job of converting. Our goal was to have a good game, create scoring chances and head into league play on a positive note. I think we accomplished that goal."
Navy opens up Patriot League play next week when it travels to Washington, D.C. to face American. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. Friday at Reeves Field.
