Navy Claims Nokia Sugar Bowl Regatta in Convincing Fashion

Jan. 3, 2006

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- The Navy IC sailing team dominated the competition at the 2005 Nokia Sugar Bowl Regatta hosted by Georgia Tech held on Georgia's Lake Lanier over the weekend. The Mids won 31-of-32 races, including all 16 in the "A" Division, to easily outdistance second-place Ohio University. The race was moved to Georgia following the destruction in New Orleans caused by Hurricane Katrina.

On Friday, five rotations with windward-leeward courses were sailed with wind conditions of 8-10 knots with puffs in the 12-knot range decreasing to five knots for the final rotation. On Saturday, completing a total of 32 races, the remaining three rotations using windward leeward for the first two and modified gold cups for the last rotation were sailed in 12-15 knot breeze with puffs in the 18-knot range.

In the "A" Division, Dave Parker and Krysta Anthony won all 16 races, while in the "B" Division, Charles Fulmer and Andrea Bosch won all but one of the 16 races.
