WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Howard men's soccer team scored two of its three goals on penalty kicks, including the overtime game-winner, to hand the Mids a 3-2 setback on Tuesday night. The loss drops Navy's record to 4-6-2 overall, while Howard improves to 3-10-1. The Mids were playing without eight regulars and four starters.
"It was a rough night for us," said head coach Rich Miranda, who was dealt a red card with about two minutes left in regulation. Miranda was protesting a no-call in the box which would have given the Mids a penalty shot in a tie game.
"We actually played pretty well, and are really showing off our depth. We are in every game, but just aren't getting very many breaks. We're gaining experience and getting better, but it's hard to get into a rhythm when there are so many players injured."
Howard took a lead early in the first half when Haribo Taylor scored just five minutes into the game on a penalty kick.
However, Navy tied the game when freshman Mark Garcia tallied his first goal of the year early in the second half.
Howard regained the lead when Michael Okoh scored on a free kick with just five minutes to play after Navy was whistled for a handball.
Again, Navy battled back and tied the game when Anthony Parker tied the game on a nifty goal with about three minutes to play. Will Riordon was credited with an assist on the goal.
Navy appeared to get the break it needed late in the game, when Addy Strasdas was tackled in the box. However, the referee made no call and Miranda was given his red card while disputing the no-call.
"He gave me a straight red card with no real warning. I really wasn't expecting it," said Miranda. "I thought the call should have been made."
Howard then ended the match on a controversial Navy foul in the box. The ref called goalkeeper Evan Barnes for a foul in the box as he was going for a loose ball, thus giving the Bison a penalty kick. Marcel Storer drilled the penalty kick, handing the Mids a 3-2 setback.

Navy will host Lafayette on Sunday, October 15, at 1:00 p.m., at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. The contest will be the final home game for the Navy men's soccer team.
