LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Navy men's cross country junior runner John Kress (Colorado Springs, Colo.) posted Navy's fastest time, 27th overall, in leading the Midshipmen to a season-ending, ninth-place finish out of 28 schools at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Championship on Lock Haven's West Branch Cross Country Course on Saturday.
No. 16 Georgetown won the team title with a score of 66 points, while Patriot League champion American placed second with 79 points. Both teams earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship on Nov. 20, in Terre Haute, Ind.
Saturday's race was held at a distance of 10,000 meters, longer than the 8,000-meter courses Navy had competed in all season.
Kress led all Navy runners across the finish line for the fifth time this season with a time of 31:21.5. The 2006 First-Team All-Patriot League runner finished 1:11.9 behind individual champion Samuel Chelanga's 30:09.6 clocking from Fairleigh Dickinson.
Freshman Chris Horel (Belford, N.J.), the 2006 Patriot League Rookie of the Year, recorded the team's second-fastest time on Saturday. Horel covered the 10k course in 32:01.4, placing 48th among all the field of 178 runners.
Senior Michael Niemi (Duluth, Minn.) soon followed in 49th place with a time of 32:04.0. Sophomore Andrew Grant (Athens, Ga.) came in 54th with a 32:10.3, while senior team captain Adam Craig (Commerce, Mich.) rounded out the scoring with a 32:23.2 showing to finish 61st.
Junior John Olsen (Staten Island, N.Y.) completed the race in 32:29.4 for 65th place and junior Lucas Burke (Bakersfield, Calif.) landed in 83rd place with a 32:47.3 time.
The Midshipmen finish the 2006 campaign with a 1-0 dual-meet record, N-Star victory over Army and a second-place finish at the Patriot League Championship.
