WEST POINT, N.Y. - Navy rifle senior Sarah Bergman (Fort Mill, S.C.) claimed match-winner honors in the air rifle with a 589 to lead the Midshipmen to a second-place performance at the President's Trophy match on Saturday morning at West Point. Army claimed the title for the second-straight year with a 5,815-point showing, followed by Navy's 5,762 points and Coast Guard's 5,519 points.
"Overall, it was a significant improvement from our matches in Alaska," stated Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "The air rifle was pretty good, but Army just had a little more depth. The format of the match really played to their depth, as you did not pick your team. Army is a tough team, they are ranked third in the country and have already defeated Nebraska this year."
Army posted a 2,924-point showing with the air rifle, while Navy scored 2,910 points and Coast Guard tallied 2,774 points. Behind Bergman's 589 was sophomore Lisa Kunzelman's (Constantia, N.Y.) 583, junior Josh Albright's (Shelton, Conn.) 582, sophomore Alex Karacsonyi's (North Haven, Conn.) 581 and senior Chris Schneider's (Fort Mill, S.C.) 575.
In smallbore, Army topped the field with 2,891 points, as Navy accumulated 2,852 points and Coast Guard racked up 2,745 points. Snyder led the way for Navy with a 581, while Albright posted a 573, Karacsonyi registered a 569, freshman Liz Leckie (Washington, Pa.) recorded a 566 and Bergman tallied 563 points.
The Midshipmen return to action next Saturday, Nov. 11, when they travel to Cambridge, Mass., to take on MIT and Wentworth at 8 a.m.
