This past weekend, the Navy IC Sailing competed in one regatta and one scrimmage. The co-ed team finished 13th overall at the College of Charleston Spring Intersectional. The co-ed team also competed in a scrimmage at home against St. Mary's, Georgetown, and Old Dominion University.
Gary Grimes with Kristen Sproat finished 12th in A division with 114 points. Rob Ramirez with Mike Mullee and Dave Parker finished 13th in B division in the 18-boat fleet. On Saturday, the sailors were met with hot temperatures and little breeze. Racing was postponed until 11:00 am when a light Southerly filled in. Two races in each division were completed before the current was stronger than the wind and racing was postponed again. The breeze shifted 180 degrees and 5-7 knots from the North which allowed four more races for the day. Navy finished the day in 10th place overall. Sunday, the temperature was colder and breeze slightly stronger from the NE shifting East. Races were held in the lee of the aircraft carrier that's moored close to the sailing center. The sailors got a good chance to experience the current and differing wind conditions they would see at Nationals. Due to Dartmouth not making their flight down, Charleston was able to enter two berths in the regatta.
The scrimmage held here at Navy was met with extremely cold temperatures. On Saturday breeze was coming out of the NW straight down the river at 15-18 knots. Seven fleet races were completed before the day's end. Sunday's focus was team racing. Three rotations of races were completed before the sailors headed home. These scrimmages allow valuable practice before the season starts in March.
