The Navy IC Sailing team traveled to Old Dominion University for the Aaron Szambecki Team Race.
On Saturday, the winds were oscillating between N and ENE at 5-18 mph. Fifty-two races were completed, with only one flight left to finish the second round robin. The "N" course was used all day and the racing was umpired. All teams were on the water during the racing as the event used 18 FJ's and six 420's. OnSunday, the winds were NW 12-20 mph. The second round robin was completed, followed by a single final four and consolation round. John Keith, Gary Grimes, Charlotte Hill, Lauren Sutehall, Andrea White, and Kristen Sproat represented Navy finishing fifth with a 7-10 record.
The team also traveled to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy for the Southern New England Team Race. Twelve teams from around the country competed in the event. The format was one round robin, then dividing into two fleets of six where the score would carry over.
Saturday started with an easterly fighting against a northerly at 5-15 knots. Once the breeze settled down from the north at 8-12 knots a single round robin of 12 teams was completed. All courses sailed were on the college style "N" course. Six protests were heard after racing. Sunday a strong northerly at 8-15 knots started the day off but by mid afternoon it had died off slightly to 5-10 knots. With a strong outgoing current and current lines all over the race course, races and rotating were slowed down. All courses sailed were the college style "N" course. After attempting to complete a second gold and silver rotation the breeze did not cooperate and races sailed were used to break ties. Ninety-nine races were completed. Ian Gill, Rob Ramirez, Andrew Vann, John Appelbaum, Mike Mullee, Stephanie Altomare and James Licata represented Navy finishing 11th with a 3-13 record.
Lastly, the team traveled to SUNY Maritime Academy for the SUNY Team Race Challenge. A triple round robin was completed on Saturday in 5-10 knots from the north. Katie Whitman, Dave Parker, Andrew Hotchkiss, Krysta Anthony, Audrey Callanan, and Trisha Kutkiewicz won the event with an 8-1 record.
