This past weekend, the Navy IC Sailing took part in three regattas. The women won the Washington College Women's Open overall, with Maggie Reynolds and Krysta Anthony winning the B division. The co-ed team won the Maryland 2-on-2 Team Race with a 13-1 record. The co-ed team made the final four at the MAISA Team Race National Qualifier.
The IC sailing team hosted and competed in the Capt. Prosser Trophy. The top eight teams from our district had to qualify for the regatta, with the top three moving onto Nationals. The breeze was coming out of the north on Saturday at 10-25 knots, with large shifts to the right all day. Large puffs were rolling over the hill, knocking down entire fleets at times. Forty-seven races were completed. On Sunday, the breeze was similar to Saturday, minus the rain. The second round-robin was completed at 11 a.m. The top four teams moved on to the final four single round-robin. Navy finished fourth overall with a 7-10 record (2-5 in round-robin #1, 5-2 in round-robin #2). The first two round robins were skippered by John Keith, Gary Grimes and Charlotte Hill. Crews were Lauren Sutehall, Kristen Sproat, Andrea White, John Appelbaum and Mike Mullee. Chuck Fulmer and Rob Ramirez skippered in the final-four rotation. The top three teams qualified for ICSA Nationals being held at College of Charleston May 28-30.
The Women's Team traveled to Chestertown, Md., to compete in the Washington College Women's Open. Seven teams competed in the regatta. Conditions were similar to those seen at Navy, with the added component of current. Navy had two crews from the women's team skippering in A and B division. They were able to show the competition how to get around the course. Trisha Kutkiewicz sailed with Audrey Callanan to a fifth-place finish in A division. Maggie Reynolds with Krysta Anthony won almost every race in B division, finishing first. Navy tied for first overall and won the tiebreaker. Also, Army was present and finished 6th overall with 108 points.
The co-ed team competed in the Maryland 2-on-2 Team race, and came home victorious. They sailed out of Severn Sailing Association, which is just around the corner from Trident Point. On Saturday, the team went undefeated. Sunday was a similar story, minus a protest that cost one race. Chuck Fulmer and Ian Gill skippered with Andrea Bosch and James Licata crewing. Dave Parker stepped in to skipper the final few races.
