Navy Heavyweights See Goes Trophy Winning Streak End

April 15, 2006

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Navy's three-year hold on the Goes Trophy ended Saturday as Syracuse topped the Mids in the varsity race on the home course for the Orange at Onondaga Lake. In addition to winning the Goes Trophy for the first time since 1999, the Orange also won the overall team points competition to win the Stagg Trophy away from the Mids.

Navy had an early lead of a couple of seats at the 500-meter mark in the race, but Syracuse slowly took a similar lead by the midpoint of the contest. After extending their lead to three-quarters of a boat length with 500 meters remaining, the Orange closed strong to win by open water.

Syracuse posted a time of 6:22.56 to defeat Navy by 11 seconds (6:33.94), with the Mids finishing nearly seven seconds in front of third-place Cornell (6:40.34).

"It was a tough day," said Navy head coach Rick Clothier. "We were still in within reach until Syracuse hit calmer water towards the end of the course and pulled away from us."

In the remaining contests on the day, the Mids placed second to Syracuse in the second varsity race, finished third to Cornell in the first freshman race, won the second freshman race and placed second to the Orange in the third varsity race.

Syracuse's 11 overall team points gave the Orange a three-point victory over both the Mids and the Big Red in the Stagg Trophy competition.

Navy will play host to Harvard and Penn April 22 on the Severn River for the Adams Cup. Racing begins at 6 a.m.
