Navy Women Sweep Georgetown

April 23, 2006

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's crew team concluded its regular season by winning a trio of races over Georgetown Sunday morning on the Severn River.

Navy's first varsity boat posted a time of 6:56.35 to win the varsity race, with Navy's second varsity boat edging Georgetown's top boat for second place by seven-tenths of a second, 7:02.34-7:03.05.

"I think this was the best race of the season for our varsity boat," said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. "On paper from the results of the two boats coming into today, I expected a close race and it was for the first 1200 meters or so. We then took charge over the next 300 meters and showed a lot of poise in building the lead. We needed a race like this heading into the conference championship."

Navy's two novice boats also placed 1-2 in the freshman race, with the first novice boat winning in a time of 7:14.69 and the second novice boat finishing in a time of 7:26.82. Georgetown's lone entry in the race placed third with a time of 7:27.62.

In a race featuring varsity and novice four boats from both schools, Navy's two varsity entries were the top placing boats with times of 7:56.55 and 8:03.69, respectively.

With the regular season now complete, Navy will turn its attention to a pair of conference championship meets over the next several weeks. The postseason begins April 30 when the Mids attempt to win their second-straight Patriot League title in Worcester, Mass., then will continue May 14 with the Eastern Sprints in Camden, N.J.
