Navy IC Sailing Team Has Successful Weekend

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's team won its qualifier for Nationals, with Katie Whitman, Andrea White and Trisha Kutkiewicz winning the A division. Charlotte Hill, Maggie Reynolds and Andrea White won the B division. The team also tied for first at the CNU 2-on-2 Regatta with a 6-1 record. Gary Grimes with Kristen Sproat and Mike Mullee finished fourth in the B division at the Thompson Trophy.

The women's team headed to SUNY Maritime Academy for the MAISA Women's Qualifier this weekend. On Saturday, the sailors were met with light drizzle and a light breeze from the East at 5-8 knots with puffs reaching 12 knots. Course 4 and Course 5 (windward leeward twice around with an upwind, or a downwind, finish) were sailed all day. Eight races were sailed leaving the girls in second place by one point after day one. The A division ended the day in third and the B division was in first. On Sunday, the rain came down in buckets. The breeze was SE at 8-15 knots with much stronger puffs rolling in when stronger rain squalls approached. The ladies sailed very well, putting points on the teams needed in order to move into the lead. The final A division race made all the difference, with the point spread being 40, 41,42,43 for the top four places in that division. A full rotation of 11 races was sailed. Katie Whitman with Andrea White (races 1-10) and Trisha Kutkiewicz (race 11) won the A division with 40 points. Charlotte Hill with Maggie Reynolds (races 1-8) and Andrea White (races 9-11) won the B division by 11 points. The top five schools move on to Nationals being held at the College of Charleston on May 24-26.

The co-ed team traveled to the US Coast Guard for the Thompson Trophy. Eighteen schools from around the country field their best teams for the last chance to race against each other before the National Qualifiers. On Saturday, sailors were met with ESE breeze all day with velocity ranging from 3-8 knots. All courses were Triangle Windward Leeward.Ten races were completed in each division with A division sailing 420's and B division sailing FJ's. It was extremely shifty as the Easterly was fighting the Southeasterly all day. On Sunday, the breeze was out of the East all day with puffs topping out at 28-30 knots. Wind speeds ranged mainly from 8-18 knots. All courses sailed were Triangle Windward Leeward. Eighteen races were sailed in each division. Andrew Vann with Lauren Sutehall (races 1-10) and John Appelbaum (races 11-18) finished 14th in A division. Gary Grimes with Kristen Sproat (races 1-10) and Mike Mullee (races 11-18) finished 4th in B division. Navy finished 11th overall with 346 points.

The co-ed team also traveled to Christopher Newport University for the CNU 2-on-2 Regatta. The breeze and weather did not cooperate with the race committee. One round-robin was completed in the two days of racing due to lightning and lack of wind. Navy tied for first with a 6-1 record. Ian Gill sailed with Krysta Anthony and Xander Campbell sailed with Andrea Bosch.

The Navy freshmen traveled to St. Mary's College for the MAISA Open. On Saturday, the sailors were plagued with light breeze leading to a large lightning storm. Sunday, the breeze was slightly better allowing six races total to be completed in each division. Andrew Hotchkiss with Dan Umpa finished seventh in A division. Mac Fletcher with James Licata finished third in B division. Navy finished seventh overall with 65 points.

Lastly, the Navy laser sailors competed close to home in a non-collegiate regatta. The Sunshine Open was held at the Severn Sailing Association. thirty-seven competitors from around the area competed in the four races were sailed. Michael Curran finished fourth with 24 points. Jake Gerlach finished 18th with 74 points. Kevin McGill finished 22nd with 87 points and Kristen Ullman finished 25th with 96 points.
