Two Mids Garner Academic All-District Honors

May 25, 2006

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy women's crew team members Madeline Boe (Jr., Winchester Bay, Ore.) and Kathleen Mortenson (Sr., Arlington, Va.) both garnered ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II honors Thursday, it was announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Boe was named to the district's first team for at-large sports, while Mortenson received second-team accolades.

"We're very excited about having two members of our program receive this honor," said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. "They both have worked very hard in the classroom and it's nice to see them garner this type of recognition."

Boe, a honors oceanography major, has posted a 3.78 cumulative grade-point average during her three years at Navy. A four-time member of the Superintendent's List who is ranked 53rd in her class, Boe was selected as a 2007 Trident Scholar at the Naval Academy for which she will work on a research project over the next 12 months.

Athletically, Boe has been a member of boats which have won Patriot League titles in both 2005 (varsity four) and '06 (second varsity), and has been part of Navy's most successful boats in the program's history of competition at the Eastern Sprints Championship. Her 2004 second novice boat placed fourth, while her '06 second varsity boat placed sixth at the regatta. The second novice boat stands as Navy's highest placing boat at the Eastern Sprints, while her second varsity crew is the top placing varsity boat at the prestigious championship.

As a member of the district's first team, Boe will be placed onto the national ballot along with first-team selections from the other seven districts across the country which will determine CoSIDA's Academic All-American teams. Former Navy rower Shaunnah Wark was selected as a Third-Team Academic All-American by the organization in 2005.

Mortenson completed her academic career at Navy with a 3.59 cumulative GPA while majoring in mechanical engineering. She also ranked third in her class on the Academy's military order of merit. Earlier this week she was selected as a National Scholar-Athlete by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association for the third-straight year.

Navy's team captain this year, Mortenson competed with the varsity boat during each of her four years at Navy, helping the crew to a Patriot League title in 2005 and posting a 19-8 regular season record in '06.

She will be commissioned as an ensign in the Navy during Friday's graduation ceremonies at Navy and will pursue a career in the medical corps.

Initial nominees for the all-district voting must be of at least sophomore standing, have a minimum 3.2 cumulative GPA and be either a starter or key reserve in their sport. The at-large team consists of student-athletes from bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo.
