Navy Opens Season With Win Over East Carolina

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Quarterback Brian Hampton ran for 149 of Navy's 403 yards in a 28-23 win over East Carolina on Saturday.

Hampton carried the ball 34 times in his first start for the Midshipmen and also scored on a 2-yard run.

Adam Ballard gained 97 yards on 13 carries and put Navy ahead with a 16-yard run to cap an opening drive in the second half.

Navy's Reggie Campbell scored on a 3-yard run with eight minutes to play. Campbell had 62 yards on eight carries.

Navy's Shun White also scored on a 3-yard run.

East Carolina quarterback James Pinkney converted 24-of-35 passes for 283 yards.

Pinkney used nine different receivers, led by Aundre Allison with six catches for 86 yards. Kevin Roach scored on a 13-yard pass from Pinkney, and Chris Johnson scored from the 5-yard line.

Navy had just six yards passing, the fewest allowed by East Carolina since Nov. 1, 1969 when they held Furman to zero passing yards.

Pinkney kept the Pirates close as he completed a 10-yard scoring pass to Phillip Henry with 4:57 to play, making it 28-23.

Navy recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock.

The teams were tied at 14 the half.
