DELAND, Fla. - Senior forward Meggie Curran (Silver Spring, Md.) scored a pair of goals and added an assist as she led the Navy women's soccer team to a 5-0 victory over Jacksonville in Deland, Fla. Sunday evening. Improving to 4-0 this season, it's the first time the Mids have opened a season with four-consecutive shutout wins since the 2002 squad turned in 10-straight shutouts before surrendering a goal. Meanwhile, Navy's 4-0 start is its best since the 2003 squad opened the year 7-0 before Cal State Northridge handed the Mids a 2-2 tie.
Curran put the Mids on the board less than three minutes into the contest off assists from sophomore midfielder CiAnna Weikle (Lakeville, Minn.), who earned just her second-career start, and junior Brigitte Fox (La Mesa, Calif.). Rookie defender Shelly Moeller (Milford, Ohio) scored on a header to give Navy a 2-0 lead just seven minutes into the game.
Freshman defender Lauren Bresnahan (Weston, Fla.) scored in the 13th minute off a Julie Reynolds (Sherman, Conn.) assist before Curran and Weikle each scored before the end of the half to give the Mids a 5-0 lead at the half. For Moeller, Bresnahan and Weikle, it was the first goals of their careers.
Just before the start of the second stanza, a bolt of lightning was spotted and the game was delayed 30 minutes.
The Mids got off nine shots in the second half and outshot the Dolphins, 18-2, for the game.
Keepers Lizzie Barnes (New Orleans, La.) and Beth Reed (Indianapolis, Ind.) split time in goal and for the second time in as many weeks, each contributed to a Navy shutout victory.
Navy returns to action on Friday when they play host to SEC power LSU. Game time is slated for 7:00 pm at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
