LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The 10th-ranked Navy water polo team defeated Johns Hopkins, 13-11, in its first game of the day, then rallied with a strong second half to defeat Bucknell, 11-7. The wins move Navy's record to 14-5 overall.
In the day's first game, Navy jumped out to a 7-5 halftime lead and held on in the second half for a 13-11 decision over Johns Hopkins.
"We didn't take a great step forward in this game. We self destructed too many times to do much damage," said Navy head coach Mike Schofield. "We gave up too many goals and had a lack of concentration and execution. We need to find some guys that want to play some defense."
Andrew Plumb led Navy with three goals, while Aaron Recko, Chuck Baker and Kevin Bell scored a pair of goals each. Todd Carlson, Tyler Hill, Eric Gardiner and Johnny Meiners scored one each. George Naughton made seven saves in goal.
In the second game, Navy fell behind 3-1 at halftime, but rallied behind 10 second-half goals for an 11-7 victory over Bucknell. The Mids outscored the Bison, 10-4, in the second half to earn their 14th win of the season.
"We played a pretty good second half after an awful first half," said Schofield. "We missed a number of good chances in the first half, but had a very good second half. I'm proud of the way we came out in the second half."
Recko scored four goals in the nightcap for the Mids. Seven other players scored one goal each. Naughton equaled a career high with 17 saves.
"That is what you want to see with the balanced scoring," said Schofield. "Naughton also had a good game for us in goal."
Navy will be in action next on Tuesday night for a 7:00 p.m., game against George Washington in MacDonough Hall.
