Mids Claim Victory in Navy Open on Saturday

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy gymnastics junior Christopher Tam (Draper, Utah) won the all-around and finished among the top-three in five events as the Midshipmen posted victories over William & Mary and James Madison on Saturday afternoon in Macdonough Hall.

The Midshipmen boasted the highest score in five of the six events to accumulate 194.05 points, followed by defending ECAC-champion William & Mary's 186.65 points and James Madison's 159.25 points.

Tam produced a score of 8.0 or higher in all six disciplines in winning the all-around with a tally of 50.7 points. The junior won the high bar with an 8.9-point mark and claimed first with his 8.1-point routine on the pommel horse. He placed second with an 8.35 on the parallel bars, while finishing third in the floor exercise (8.3) and still rings (8.25).

Immediately following Tam in the all-around was sophomore Ken Lee (Rockville, Md.), who posted a total of 46.6 points to finish second. Lee tied for fourth on the vault with an 8.8-point effort and placed third on the pommel horse with a 7.8-point showing.

Junior Brandon Cook (Longmont, Colo.) chipped in with two top-two performances on Saturday. Cook won the floor exercise with a score of 8.9 and landed second on the vault with his 9.1-point performance.

Three other Midshipmen earned marks among the top-three scorers. Sophomore Joseph Atzenbeck (Broomfield, Colo.) placed second on the high bar with a score of 8.85, followed by junior Isaac Olson's (Spokane, Wash.) 8.1-point showing. Sophomore James Godfrey (Columbia, S.C.) tied Tam for third place in the floor exercise with an 8.3-point effort.

Navy (2-0) returns to action in two weeks (Jan. 26-27) when it heads to the West Point Open.
