FLOURTOWN, Pa. -- Senior captain Chris Renninger (Darnestown, Md.) turned in a 2-over par 73 in the final round to lead the Navy golf team to an 11th-place finish at the 15-team Big 5 Classic Sunday afternoon at the Philadelphia Cricket Club in Flourtown, Pa. The Mids, who finished the two-day tournament with a 54-over par 622, edged out Saint Joseph's by a stroke, moving up a spot in the final standings.

Cornell (299-296--595) overcame a 7-stroke deficit to win the tournament by four strokes over Seton Hall (292-307--599). Meanwhile, George Mason's J.J. Amoruso shot par on both days to claim individual medalist honors, edging out Boston College's Craig Kublin who finished 1-over par (143).

"The Philadelphia Cricket Club is a beautiful course," said Navy head coach Pat Owen. "But for our guys, there is really no way to prepare for the difficulty, the slope and speed of the greens. I think our scores were indicative of that.

"If you are an Ivy League school and practice and competed on a course like this on a regular basis, you definitely have an advantage. It poses a good challenge for our players and courses they may take on in the future. Bottom line was that we didn't putt very well as a team because the greens were terribly difficult."

Renninger, who turned in a 10-over par 81 in the first round, came back to post the low round for the Mids on Sunday. Thanks to his 73 in the final round, he jumped from 63rd to Navy's top placer in 29th with a two-day mark of 154 (+12).

Junior David Miller (Chillicothe, Ohio) slipped from 15th all the way back to 35th after posting a 9-over par 80 on Sunday. He finished just a stroke behind Renninger with a 155.

Finishing just a stroke behind Miller was classmate Ryan Wielgus (Bethesda, Md.) who produced a 14-over par 156. Wielgus owned Navy's second-lowest score of the day with a 6-over par 77.

Rounding out the five-man group for the Midshipmen was Erich Schoen (Sylvania, Ohio) in 46th (78-79--157) and senior Ryan Sload (Lancaster, Pa.) in 79th (91-88--179).

Navy will close out the fall season when it travels to the West Coast to compete in the Sycuan Collegiate Invitational Oct. 22-23.
