LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The No. 13-ranked Navy water polo team pieced together perhaps its best performances of the year, capping the weekend off with an impressive sweep of No. 14-ranked Bucknell, 10-5, and No. 11-ranked St. Francis (N.Y.), 9-7, in overtime. The wins move Navy's overall record to 13-5, including 2-0 in the CWPA Southern Division.
In the first game of the day against Bucknell, the Mids jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first half, withstood a mini-Bison rally to lead 9-5 after three quarters, and breezed to a 10-5 decision. The win was Navy's 13th straight against the Bison, and improved the all-time series over Bucknell to 62-9.
Aaron Recko led Navy with five points (4 g, 1 a), while Mike Mulvey added four points (3 g, 1 a). Eric Gardiner contributed with three points (1 g, 2 a) and Andrew Bingham scored two points (1 g, 1 a). Four other players scored one point each. George Naughton was dominating in the net, recording a career-best 17 saves.
In the day's second game, Recko and Mulvey scored overtime goals to lead Navy to a 9-7 decision over 11th-ranked St. Francis (N.Y.). Recko scored three goals, while Mulvey added two goals and an assist. Bingham scored one goal and dished out two assists. Tyler Hill scored twice, and Kevin Bell tallied a goal with an assist. Naughton had another outstanding game, stopping 16 shots in goal.
Navy will be in action next on Wednesday, Oct. 10, with road games at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore at 4:30 pm, and George Washington in Washington, D.C. at 8:00 pm.
