PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Navy squash team improved to 3-0 in its season-opening weekend trip to the San Francisco Bay area, handing USC and the host Stanford Cardinal each 9-0 losses. The Mids opened the 2008-09 season Friday night at Cal, where they swept the Golden Bears 9-0 and did not give up a game in any of the nine matches.
Heading into the weekend, senior Allen Hartley (Charleston, W.Va.) owned the team's longest winning streak at eight. He's now won 11 in a row after handing Devansh Mittal of USC a 9-4, 9-1, 9-1 loss, followed by a 7-9, 9-4, 9-0, 9-6 victory over Derek Rowley of Stanford in the afternoon at the No. 4 spot. Second-year standout Allan Lutz has won seven in a row dating back to last year. He claimed a 9-3, 9-0, 9-1 win over USC's Harsh Podar at the No. 2 position, while then taking a 9-2, 9-2, 9-6 decision over Pat Bugas from Stanford.
After a back injury sidelined Brad Seidel (Toledo, Ohio) for much of his rookie campaign, he is off and running in 2008. Seidel posted a 9-3, 9-0, 9-5 win over A. Somanathan of USC before taking down Stanford's Wyatt Hong, 9-1, 9-1, 9-0 at the No. 5 slot. In his three matches this weekend, notably the first three varsity matches of his career, sophomore Tommy McNamara (New York, N.Y.) surrendered just two points. He defeated USC's S. Kajaria 9-1, 9-1, 9-0 before earning a 9-0, 9-0, 9-0 victory over Stanford's Carl Case at No. 9.
Also boosting their records to 3-0 this weekend were Nils Mattsson (Spring House, Pa.) at No. 1, Ben Mantica (Binghamton, N.Y.) at No. 3, Justin Langan (St. Louis, Mo.) at No. 6, Christopher Zipf (Gladwyne, Pa.) at No. 7 and Michael Beautyman Jr (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) at No. 8.
"This was a terrific trip for our team to make," said ninth-year Navy head coach and former All-American Craig Dawson. "We had three favorable outcomes in what was a great opening weekend. Our players were particularly motivated by the support of the parents club, while inspired by two of our own who came out to cheer the team on. Carl Hoffner, Class of `53, and 1962 All-American Lee Pekary came out for the Stanford match in support of our program. I can't say enough about the support we receive from our graduates."
The Mids will be back in action next weekend when they play host to the Navy Invitational, a two-day round robin event that kicks off on Friday against Virginia (2:00 pm).
