PRINCETON, N.J. - Navy men's cross country runner Andrew Hanko (So./Montville, N.J.) earned all-region honors to help the Midshipmen to a 10th-place finish out of 24 teams at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Championship on the Princeton Cross Country Course Saturday.
Georgetown won the regional title with an impressive 27-point showing, followed by Penn State's 73 points for second place. The Hoyas and the Nittany Lions both earned a spot in the NCAA Championship on Monday, Nov. 24, in Terre Haute, Ind.
Lehigh placed ninth with 269 points to nip Patriot League Co-Champion Navy's 298 points for 10th place. The Midshipmen edged 11th-place Maryland, who tallied 304 points on the afternoon.
"Today was a tough day for us," stated Navy head coach Al Cantello. "Our team captain was unable to finish the race. Traditionally, we are a top-five team in the region, but today we were 10th."
Hanko, who finished second at the Patriot League Championship two weeks ago, completed the 10k course in 33:08 to place 24th out of 171 runners. He finished 1:32 behind individual champion Andrew Bumbalough's 21:36 showing from Georgetown. For Hanko and the Midshipmen, it was their first 10k race of the year after competing at an 8k distance for most of the fall.
Matthew De Villers (So./Menomonee Falls, Wis.) finished 40th with a time of 33:43, soon followed by Matt Leyndyke's (Sr./Traverse City, Mich.) 34:05 showing for 48th place. Patriot League Rookie-of-the-Meet Jeremy Haney (Fr./Palmyra, Va.) landed in 95th place with a 35:13 clocking and Ken Bunnell (Fr./St. Johnsbury, Vt.) rounded out Navy's scoring five with a 35:17 performance for 97th place.
