ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The red-hot Navy squash team cruised to its 13th-straight win Sunday when it handed Hobart a 9-0 loss on the final day of the Navy Veterans Weekend Tournament held at the Halsey Field House International Squash Courts in Annapolis. Not only have the Mids won 13 in a row, they have shut out each of their 13 opponents this fall.
"Our team played as well this morning as we've played all year," said ninth-year Navy head coach Craig Dawson. "We are right where we want to be at this point in the season and we're looking forward to our trip to Dartmouth next weekend."
Senior Michael Beautyman Jr (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) is the lone player on the roster to play a part in each of the 13 wins. He grabbed his 13th win of the year Sunday thanks to a 9-0, 9-3, 9-6 win over Hobart senior Mook Lawrence.
Both sophomore Brad Seidel (Toledo, Ohio) and junior Justin Langan (St. Louis, Mo.) improved to 11-0 with wins at the No. 5 and 6 positions, respectively. Seidel turned in a 9-0, 9-1, 9-1 victory over Grant Palermo, while Langan pitched a 9-2, 9-0, 9-1 performance against Statesman junior Craig Chircop.
Navy's No. 9 player, Tommy McNamara (New York, N.Y.), has been nothing short of consistent for Dawson in his first season with the varsity squad. McNamara is now 12-0 after blowing past Carl Ranieri, 9-3, 9-1, 9-7.
Meanwhile, seniors Christopher Zipf (Gladwyne, Pa.) and Allen Hartley (Charleston, W.Va.), along with junior standouts Ben Mantica (Binghamton, N.Y.) and Nils Mattsson (Spring House, Pa.) are off to a 10-0 start this season. Zipf, Navy's team captain, turned in a 10-8, 9-2, 9-3 victory over Kevin Kent, while Hartley, who owns an 18-match winning streak dating back to last season, produced a 9-1, 9-1, 9-1 win over Corey Kabot. Mantica nearly blanked Hobart's Luke Esselen with a 9-0, 9-0, 9-1 win, while Mattsson continues to impress as the team's No. 1 player with a 9-0, 9-4, 9-4 victory over Cale Forgues.
After playing 10 of their first 13 matches at home, the Mids will not see Halsey Field House again until mid-January. Navy will play seven straight matches on the road beginning with next weekend's trip to Hanover, N.H. where they will play in a tournament hosted by Dartmouth. The Mids will battle Dartmouth on Friday at 5:00 pm and will continue on with neutral site matches against Tufts (11:00 am) and MIT (4:00 pm) on Saturday. Navy will close out the weekend with a 10:00 am contest at Connecticut College on Sunday.
