ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy Squash Round Robin proved to be successful for the Mids, as they won all five matches over the weekend, including four on Saturday. Navy swept all four of its competitors -- North Carolina, 8-0; Georgetown, 9-0; Washington & Lee, 6-0; Vanderbilt, 9-0 -- without giving up a game.
A deep roster allowed for Navy head coach Craig Dawson to shift his lineup based on a busy schedule. Heading into the weekend, two Navy players saw their first varsity action in their trip a week earlier to California. On Friday, rookie Clayton Young (River Forest, Ill.) played and won his first collegiate match. On Saturday, freshman John Tracey (Owings Mills, Md.) became the fourth player on the Navy roster to play in his first varsity match. Tracey earned wins in Navy's first two matches of the day, a 9-0, 9-0, 9-0 sweep over North Carolina's David Beverino and a 9-1, 9-0, 9-4 victory over Peter Fromson of Georgetown.
Speaking of Young, he was one of three players on the Navy roster to see action in all four matches on Saturday. Young was one of four players who did not surrender a point against their North Carolina counterpart, as he posted a 9-0, 9-0, 9-0 victory over Suzanne Michalak. He followed up with a 9-1, 9-3, 9-0 win over Georgetown's Samuel Clarke. In the afternoon matches, he turned in a 9-0, 9-0, 9-1 win over Hammond McKeever of Washington & Lee and capped off the day with a 9-0, 9-0, 9-0 win over Vanderbilt.
Sophomore Brad Seidel (Toledo, Ohio) also participated in all four matches, including the Washington & Lee match where he made his first career appearance as the No. 1 player. Seidel walked away with a 9-1, 9-2, 9-3 victory over Woody Harrells.
Not only did senior Michael Beautyman Jr (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) play in all four matches on Saturday, he is the lone player on the roster to have see action in every match this season. Owning an 8-0 record, Beautyman carded four wins on the day, including a 9-1, 9-1, 9-1 win over Fred Hudson of Vanderbilt to push his career record to 47-34.
Meanwhile, senior Allen Hartley (Charleston, W.Va.) and second-year standout Allan Lutz (McLean, Va.) continue to boast impressive records. Hartley, who capped off his day with a 9-1, 9-2, 9-0 victory over Vanderbilt's Tyler Kopp, owns a three-year mark of 34-8. Lutz, who captured a 9-1, 9-3, 9-4 win over Ivan Ng of North Carolina in the morning opener, owns a two-year mark of 29-8.
"We had a positive day of squash," said Navy head coach Craig Dawson. "Not only did we have many, many compliments about our facility, we were able to get several matches in. Our roster this year is one that we can sit and rest some players on not skip a beat. We had player after player step in and play well today."
The Midshipmen will be back in action next weekend when they play host to the Navy Veterans Weekend Tournament.
