Patriot League Weekly Release (9.2.08)
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Junior center back Shelly Moeller (Milford, Ohio) has been named the Patriot League/Brine Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Moeller, who is a five-time recipient of the league's weekly award, is the second Navy women's soccer player to be honored by the league this fall. Senior forward Kristen Laraway (Long Valley, N.J.) was tabbed the offensive player of the week on Aug. 26.
The Milford, Ohio native's inspired play carried the Midshipmen women to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory at UC Davis on Sunday afternoon. Moeller delivered at both ends of the field in Navy's thrilling overtime win, heading home the game-winner in the 94th minute, while also playing an instrumental role in holding the host Aggies to a single goal.
It was her first career golden goal and just the 11th in Navy soccer history. Moeller, however, is no stranger to scoring game-deciding goals, as Sunday's winner was the fourth of her career.
A fixture on Navy's backline, Moeller has started every game since the beginning of her freshman season, an impressive streak that reached 50 consecutive contests on Sunday.
"Shelly has been phenomenal for us in the last two games," said Navy head coach Carin Gabarra. "She stepped up her game against two strong opponents and was a major difference-maker in the back."
The Midshipmen (2-1-0) will be back in action on Friday when they host first-time opponent Winthrop. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
