NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Navy squash team turned in a split in its two matches at the Yale Round Robin Saturday, including a 9-0 victory over Colby that gave the Midshipmen their 20th win of the season. An hour after its win, Navy was tripped up by No. 3 Yale, 9-0.
Navy, who is now 20-4 on the year, has reached the 20-win plateau for just the fifth time in program history, including the third time under ninth-year head coach Craig Dawson. Dawson guided the Mids to a school-record 24 wins en route to a 24-7 mark in 2004-05, while two years ago Navy finished 23-8. With eight regular-season matches remaining, along with the Collegiate Squash Association Team Championship, the Midshipmen will have the opportunity to break the school record for wins.
"While the result was 9-0, we really had a hard-fought match against Colby today," said Dawson. "There were some fantastic matches that we were able to pull ahead in and win.
"Yale is as good a program as we've faced this season. We gave them a good fight, but they are a very strong team from top to bottom."
After suffering a tough loss on Friday evening to Connecticut College, Navy junior Nils Mattsson (Spring House, Pa.) regrouped and powered past Colby rookie Harry Smith, 9-0, 9-7, 9-3, at the No. 1 position.
Colby looked to have a win at No. 2 when senior Jake Leiby opened the match by pitching 9-2 and 9-3 wins over second-year Navy standout Allan Lutz (McLean, Va.). Lutz, however, had different plans for the match as he staged an exciting come-from-behind victory by taking games three thru five, 9-7, 9-2, 9-4. Lutz is now one of four players on the roster who have reached 18 wins this season, as he boasts a 41-10 career mark.
Senior Allen Hartley (Charleston, W.Va.) continued to shine, turning in a 3-1 decision over Colby senior Justin Russell at No. 5. Hartley opened the match with a 9-3 win, however, Russell battled back to tie the match at one apiece with a 9-5 game-two victory. Hartley stole game three, 10-9, before putting away Russell in the fourth, 9-3.
Junior Justin Langan (St. Louis, Mo.) improved to 18-3 on the year after cruising to a 3-0 triumph over Nat Cooper at No. 6, while sophomore Brad Seidel (Toledo, Ohio) also captured win No. 18 by taking down Harry Goldstein, 9-3, 9-2, 9-0, at No. 4.
The No. 8 slot was taken by Navy sophomore Tommy McNamara (New York, N.Y.) who easily took game one, 9-1. However, fellow sophomore Dan Lesser pushed McNamara in game two, but was unable to get past his foe as McNamara won, 10-8. The third game was easily won by McNamara by a 9-0 count.
Navy will close out the weekend Sunday when it travels to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. to face No. 39 Vassar. Action is scheduled to begin at 12:00 pm.
