ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The No. 13 Navy squash team opened Saturday by taking down Colgate, 9-0, in the first of two matches in round robin action at Halsey Field House in Annapolis. Sixth-ranked Rochester, meanwhile, had no problem in getting past the home squash, as the Mids dropped a 9-0 decision to the Yellowjackets.
While Navy's top four players saw action in the Colgate match, head coach Craig Dawson mixed and matched the bottom half of the ladder to give some of his younger players an opportunity to play. Rookie John Tracey (Owings Mills, Md.) played just his fourth collegiate varsity match, turning away Connor Smith in three games without giving up a point. Meanwhile, freshman Clayton Young (River Forest, Ill.) improved to 9-0 on the year by handling Nik Hjelm, 9-2, 9-0, 9-0.
Second-year standout Justin Langan (St. Louis, Mo.), senior team captain Christopher Zipf (Gladwyne, Pa.) and junior Tommy McNamara (New York, N.Y.) all bumped up a spot, giving senior Allen Hartley (Charleston, W.Va.) a breather in the morning. Langan was flawless in his 3-0 victory over Colgate's Jake Gregory as he claimed his 20th win of the season. Both Zipf and McNamara were challenged, but both came out on top. Zipf turned in a 9-3, 9-5, 9-3 win over Andy Cherna, while McNamara posted a 9-5, 9-1, 9-3 victory over Todd Goldman.
After recording an 8-4 record as a freshman a year ago, Brad Seidel (Toledo, Ohio) won his 20th match of the 2008-09 campaign thanks to a 9-3, 9-0, 9-4 win over Steve Carey, while classmate Allan Lutz (McClean, Va.) is now 43-11 over his two-year career after closing out his match against Kyle Deombeleg, 9-1, 9-0, 9-3.
Junior Ben Mantica (Binghamton, N.Y.) decisioned Colgate team captain Matthew Bloch in three games, while No. 1 player Nils Mattsson (Spring House, Pa.) managed to pick up a 9-5, 9-2, 9-7 victory over Robert McCrary.
The Yellowjackets, meanwhile, not only won all nine matches, they pitched 3-0 shutouts over the Mids in each match. Rochester's top three players are ranked among the top 20, including Jim Bristow, who is No. 6 as well as eighth-ranked Hameed Ahmed.
The Mids are set to close out the weekend with a pair of Sunday morning matches against Penn State (9:00 am) and Lafayette (11:00 am).
