ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Bucknell's Sean King tallied the game's lone goal in the 28th minute to lift the Bucknell men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Navy on a gorgeous night at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. The loss drops Navy's overall record to 5-5-0 and 1-1-0 in the Patriot League, while Bucknell improves to 7-3-0 and 1-1-0.
For the second straight game, Navy could muster just one shot on goal, despite carrying the play for much of the second half.
"I thought we gave a pretty good effort and played well again," said Navy head coach Dave Brandt. "We are still finding things out about our team and what works and what doesn't. We were unfortunate to not get anything out of it, I thought."
Navy struggled in the first half with keeping possession and it finally caught up with the Midshipmen midway through the half. After a Navy turnover in its own offensive end, King found some space at the top of the box and sent a low, hard shot to the left post that sneaked under diving goalkeeper Tyler Bristol's hands and into the back of the net for a 1-0 Bucknell lead.
"We gave away the ball way too much in the first half and against a good team, at some point, it is going to cost you. That is the risk you run when that happens," said Brandt. "We just weren't tough enough with the ball and you open the door for the other team when that is the case."
Navy came out in the second half and carried most of the play and had its chances. Early on in the stanza, a Mark Garcia cross to a streaking Kyle Behbehani just sailed over Behbehani's foot as the Bucknell defense was out of position. Later in the half, David Jackson found some space, but his hard shot was right at Bucknell keeper Tommy Caso, who swallowed up the chance.
Navy's last solid set of opportunites came with about eight minutes left in the game with three straight corner kicks. However, Bucknell was able to stay out of danger on the first two and a Sam Lepley header on the third corner kick sailed high.
Navy outshot the Bison, 8-7, and had five corner kicks to Bucknell's three. Navy was whistled for seven fouls to Bucknell's 10. Bristol made one save in goal, before Will Craven came on in the second half, making two fantastic saves in his first career action.
Navy will travel to Loyola (Md.) on Tuesday for a 5:00 pm game in Baltimore.
