Navy Men's Soccer Shut Out By Colgate, 2-0

Oct. 30, 2009

Final Stats

HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Colgate scored a pair of goals in a two-minute, 23-second span in the second half to hand the Navy men's soccer team a tough 2-0 loss on Friday night in Hamilton, N.Y. The loss drops Navy's record to 8-9-0 overall and to 2-4-0 in the Patriot League. Colgate improved to 7-8-1 overall and 3-3-0 in league play.

The loss may also end Navy's hopes at a Patriot League Tournament berth. The Mids may mathematically still be alive following the weekend, but for the Mids to have a legitimate shot, they needed to win out.

"The reality is that we have outplayed six Patriot League soccer teams, and we have two wins to show for it," said Navy head coach Dave Brandt. "We have to learn how to finish our chances and capitalize on our opportunities. I thought we had great chances tonight and had nothing to show for it. It's obviously frustrating, but I really like the soccer we are playing. We as a program just need to learn how to win. We are doing the things we want to do, but the bottom line is you have to score, and we aren't doing that."

After a scoreless first half, in which Colgate outshot the Mids, 5-2, Navy turned the tables on the Raiders, peppering the Colgate goal in the first 20 minutes of the stanza. However, at the 65:37 mark, Chris Ross sent a pass to Mike Reidy at the near post. Reidy played a cross shot into the far corner of the net for a 1-0 Colgate advantage.

The Raiders wasted little time adding to the lead, when at the 68-minute mark, Jeff Leach scored on a 15-yard shot that tipped off Tyler Bristol's fingers and into the near corner.

The Raiders then held Navy at bay, despite constant pressure, and the Mids were shut out for the ninth time in the 2009 season.

Navy outshot Colgate, 10-9, had seven corner kicks to Colgate's three and were whistled for just seven fouls to Colgate's 10. Bristol made one save in 70 minutes, before being replaced by Will Craven, who did not record a save in 20 minutes of action. Chris Miller made four saves, including three in the decisive second half, for Colgate.

Navy will travel to College Park on Tuesday night to take on defending NCAA Champion and No. 6-ranked Maryland at 7:30 pm. Navy will then close out the regular season at Lafayette next Saturday night at 7:00 pm in Easton, Pa.
