ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy senior Shelly Moeller (Milford, Ohio)was named to the 2009 NSCAA/adidas Women's College Scholar All-America Team, the organization announced recently. Moeller, who was pegged as a second-team selection, is just the second player in program history to earn Academic All-America honors from the NSCAAjoining former standout defender Nicole Aunapu ('99), who accomplished the feat during the 1998 season. The prestigious national academic honor is yet another highlight in a season filled with accolades for the Milford, Ohio native.
A two-time Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year and four-time conference all-star, Moeller was recently named to the NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region First Team, NSCAA Scholar All-East First Teamand was also recognized as an ESPN/CoSIDA Third-Team Academic All-American.
Moeller owns a 3.57grade-point average while majoring in honors oceanography. She has been named to the Commandant's List after each of her first six semesters at the Academy. Moeller held the top ranking in Military Order of Merit amongst her classmates through herfirst two years in Annapolisand is currently 20th in the Class of 2010.
Moellercapped off a brilliant career in the Blue and Goldwith yet another stellar seasonin 2009. She anchored a Navy backlinethat posted a conference-best 11 shutouts, including four in Patriot League play, and was the conference's top scoring defender with nine points (3 g, 3 a), giving her 43 points (18 g, 7 a) for her career- which ranks first all-time among Navy defenders.
Moeller also leaves as Navy's all-time leader ingames-started and games-played, and is the proud owner of the longest consecutive start streak in the 20-year history of Patriot League soccer, having earned the starting nod in all90 games of hercollegiate soccer career.
To be nominated for consideration, student-athletes must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) throughout their career; start more than 50 percent of all games and be a significant contributor to the team; be nominated by an institution that is a current NSCAA College Services member; be a junior or above in academic standing at the current institution and either be in their second year at the current school if a transfer student.
The NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-America selections will be recognized at the annual All-America Luncheon, held in Philadelphia, Pa., on Jan. 16 as part of the 2010 NSCAA Convention.
