ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Four recent graduates from the Navy gymnastics team were recognized as All-America Scholar-Athletes by the College Gymnastics Association (CGA), it was announced on Monday morning.
Trey James (Matthews, N.C.) and James Godfrey (Columbia, S.C.) were both named to the first team for the third time in their careers on Monday. James, a systems engineering major, produced a 3.81 grade-point average during the spring to conclude his time in Annapolis with a 3.51 cumulative grade-point average. Godfrey earned a 3.75 grade-point average during his final semester and a 3.57 cumulative grade-point average while majoring in English.
Team captain Adam Stanton (Centennial, Colo.) and Joseph Atzenbeck (Broomfield, Colo.) were both recognized as second-team members. Stanton, a systems engineering major, earned second-team kudos for the second time in his career after producing a 3.44 grade-point average in the spring. Atzenbeck delivered a 3.73 grade-point average in his final semester, while also majoring in systems engineering, to receive the honor from the CGA for the first time in his career.
As a team, Navy ranked 15th nationally in team grade-point average - ahead of service academy rivals Army and Air Force.
Last winter, the Midshipmen advanced to the NCAA Qualifying Meet as a team for the first time in program history after finishing the regular season with an impressive 15-4 record. The Mids also placed second at the ECAC Championship with three individual event titles, won the N-Star at Army and claimed the All-Academy Championship title for the second-straight year.
