Mids Fall 1-0 in Overtime at Monmouth

Sept. 26, 2009

Box Score

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Junior Mary Wilks scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season with just 17 seconds remaining in the first overtime period to lead host Monmouth (5-3-0) to a 1-0 victory over Navy (8-2-1) on Saturday afternoon.

After dropping its first two contests this season, Monmouth, who went 14-4-1 a year ago, has now reeled off shutout victories in five of its last six matches.

For the Midshipmen, meanwhile, the loss is their first on the road this season and the first in 12 matches outside of Annapolis dating back to 2008.

The two sides played to a scoreless first half, with Monmouth outshooting the Mids by a 9-0 margin, putting four attempts on target.

It was more of the same in the second 45 minutes, as the Hawks generated four more shots on goal, but senior keeper Beth Reed (Indianapolis, Ind.) successfully turned away each attempt and wound up with eight saves at the end of regulation.

After 90 minutes, Monmouth held a 13-1 edge in shots and a 6-2 advantage in corners drawn. Navy's lone attempt came on a Shelly Moeller (Milford, Ohio) header off a corner kick in the 86th minute.

The Hawks registered three shots in the first overtime period to the Mids' one, with the third beating Reed from 25 yards out to the far post for the 'Golden Goal'.

Navy will be right back in action in Dover, Del. on Sunday afternoon, when it looks to rebound against Delaware State at 1:00 pm.

Match Notes:

* Monmouth and Navy last met during the 1996 season. The Hawks now hold a 3-0 lead in the all-time series.
